The combination of really solid parrying and book magic in Avowed makes it REALLY annoying that you can't go shield/book I think that's deliberate channeling towards Gun Wizard, and I get it, but still I loved being a Shield Wizard in Skyrim and you can't parry with a book

Finally tried Avowed and it seems...fine? Very "seventh gen Western CRPG". I don't know how much I'm gonna actually play, as Rogue Trader made a surprise GamePass appearance and I'd been waiting for a sale on that one, but what I played of Avowed seemed quite nice.
