Martha Gelhorn, among the most perceptive foreign journalists to cover the Spanish Civil War. When asked in 1983 of her abiding memory of the conflict, she answered ‘The enormous bravery of the people, absolutely unbelievable bravery under appalling conditions'

CNT anarchist trade union poster. Madrid. 1936-38. The train advances towards the future crushing capitalism and fascism under its wheels. Beautiful artwork by artist signing as "Iturzaeta".

I love this stamp depicting the legend of the island of Sa Dragonera off Mallorca, named because it resembles a sleeping dragon.

Republican troops moving tentatively into Belchite, Aragón after taking from Francoist defenders. September 1937. Photographer Agustí Centelles on the front line and clearly taking risks

The extraordinary eye of the bearded vulture. Spanish+Catalan terms quebrantahuesos/trencalòs (bonebreaker) refers to it dropping bones from high to smash on rocks to get marrow. Didn't manage last yea. For the Basques it's ugatz-I'd love to use that in a conversation one day. Begiratu! Ugatz bat!

La Huella (The Fingerprint). Memorial by Juanjo Novella in Monte Artxanda, above Bilbao remembering all those who fought and were victims of Franco's murderous war and dictatorship. Image. Wiki

I was very lucky to go on Nick's walking tour of Barcelona a few years ago. It was very special to see the city through the lens of the Spanish Revolution. Highly recommend going if you are in Barcelona.

"Veterens of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade" 45th anniversary of their formation to fight fascism in Spain. Benefit for refugees from El Salvador, 1982. Walking Museum of the Spanish Civil War

El meu carrer Mi calle Nire kalea My street

Summer 1936 portrait of Gitano / Roma militiaman with anarchist scarf. One of many remarkable photos from recently discovered box of negatives of Barcelona in Spanish Civil War by Antoni Campañà. Beautifully colourised by Julius Backmaan. Power of working class saying no pasarán.

On Spanish RTVE now news that the Monte Perdido glacier, the fourth largest in the Pyrenees, is predicted to disappear by 2035. 😢

Fideuà amb alioli for lunch. Catalan classic!

American brigaders resting at Almochuel, just outside Belchite after taking the latter. September 1937. Photo by Washington-born volunteer Harry Randall.

Remains of late 1st CE Roman aqueduct which brought water to Barcelona from the Besòs river 13km away. Abandoned in the C6-7th.

Another world. Images of Alto Aragón by Ricardo Compairé. High Pyrenees, 1920-30s. Via t.co/Jlc8vuu7g1

Gothic Quarter, Barcelona

The Temptation of Man by Gaudí. Sagrada Familia: a worker offered an Orsini bomb by the clawed hand of Satan in guise of serpent. Bomb direct reference to same model thrown by anarchist in Liceu Opera House, 1893. No reference to slave profits of patron's family. Photo by @katainger.bsky.social

In front of what was the headquarters of the Durruti column in Bujaraloz for the Aragón front. Casa-palacio de Torres Solanot.

Football match at the ground of Europa, Barcelona's 3rd or 4th team (with Sant Andreu), then and now, in front of the Sagrada Familia in 1915. By Frederic Juandó Alegret.

Unexcavated POUM/Republican position somewhere near where Orwell fought in the Sierra de Alcubierre, Aragón. Meanwhile in 2025, we totter towards fascism.

Stork residence on a grain silo. Lanaja, Aragón

La Lomaza, Belchite steppes, larksong in Aragón, a partridge flits past. "Es el far west" says my Catalan friend.

Belchite, Aragón, damaged during the 1937 Republican offensive and then further destroyed by Francoist counter-offensive aided by the Condor Legion and then above all 88 years of abandonment. Always worth visiting.

La Pequeña Rusia, "refugee" camp just outside Belchite, Aragón for "Red" Republican families (men forced labourers elsewhere). Still called Little Russia today. To keep 'infected" population safe distance from new town as cordon sanitaire. As shocking as ruined town itself. Hunger, lice, humiliation

Diálogo sosegado sobre Franco. Parece difícil, pero @juliaoteroradio.bsky.social lo consigue www.ondacero.es/programas/ju...
