Patterns in Nature Li - the asymmetrical, nonrepetitive, and unregimented order which we find in nature Nature uses the same patterns again and again These are the 24 from the book 'Li: Dynamic Form in Nature' by David Wade with examples from things I've photographed (See next for the types)

"I declare spring officially - open" ...says the snowdrop I like the Gaelic seasons - they seem in touch with nature more than the 'offical' ones Winter (Geimhreadh) - Nov - Jan Spring (Earrach) - Feb - April Summer (Samhradh) - May - July Autumn (Fómhar) - Aug - Oct happy First of Snowdrop!

who thought of taking a rainbow turning it round and spreading it across the whole sky who thought of that? I love the glow that you get before sunrise. The horizon seeming to emanate a rainbow's worth of colours This morning's was one of the best, most vivid ever. I'm glad I was alive to see it.

A personal favourite first sign of spring ( pre spring at least ) The often overlooked tiny female flower of hazel. Hazel is wind pollinated - from pollen from the catkins which are male - the female flowers develop into oval fruits - hazelnuts.

Frosty honesty

The cloud below the sky

The first sign of spring! An open hazel catkin. Pre-spring at least. It's the first thing look out for - that says spring is not far away. BTW both hazel and alder have unopened catkins that can be seen throughout late autumn & winter, like the ones near the top, but the lower one has just opened.

Spiral of Weather I put some acrylic paint on a canvas board yesterday and left it outside in the snow and rain

- I shall know less - this year I shall know fewer things If I see a wren, I wont know it's a wren or even whether it's a bird or a swollen river's smooth-humped water like a baby's kicks from inside the womb.....

The trees have a message for us, one of hope The old year has gone, it's a kind of death But next spring's leaf buds are already in place - seeds of rebirth laid down in summer. Tiny resurrections everywhere Each one is a sign of optimism, of faith in future Find a tree Find a bud Find hope

may you weather the named storms, things there are words for and the unnamed ones too, only you know where your rainbows are kept
