I make friends in the forest and enjoy the little things. Catio deck repurposed. Professionally creative: that's not why I'm here. Encourager of exploration, enabler of chaos, wanderer, wonderer, chosen weapon: appreciation (genuine).

Finally got a picture of a towhee that's not in the shadows. They seem to be good friends with the juncos. They hop around in the underbrush of the woods a lot, and under the table on the deck in the same way. Their bright wings and belly make them easy to spot, but they move quick.

No nuts, no problem. The trees are full of yummy pine cones, and I got to watch how they're picked.

Some good news

A colleague popped in to check on my work, just when I was doing some editing on the web. Great timing, and such nice company. Little dude went on to remind me to look at my stack of papers, and then quietly shuffled off.

I have a completely blind friend who, before becoming blind, was a photographer. This friend has gotten so used to missing and minimal image info, that they carve out time to praise people for descriptive, and even "flowery", alt text. In the Alt text, you are their eyes. Fill that character count!

Breaking news: A squirrel friend has managed to carry a large glob of peanut butter (almost as big as their head) through the trees. Holding onto it only with their mouth. Now I'm left wondering if I could do that with a proportionally sized glob.

Regardless of the groundhog's opinion, here's how I know Spring is coming soon: there's small undevoured piles of bird seed on the deck the next morning, yet the birds appear just as happy and thankful as always. Also they're singing more.

Out of nuts again. They've been content wolfing down sunflower seeds, but today as I walked by the window a few times, this guy got excited, came to the door, and waited. So I held out a spoon of peanut butter. He took it right from the spoon and stayed there to eat it. Came back for more too.

Wow! What a shot!

This is Floyd, named after Pink Floyd because of some of their spacey music. When I see him, I think "what's on his head?". That is his head. Floyd has a constellation of white spots on his black head. He's got a head full of stars.

Good Morning & welcome to marvellous marmalade Monday The happiest people are the ones who greet others with a smile. Try to be one of them.

This is a photo I took a few years ago of a White-throated Sparrow in the snow at my house. I couldn't believe what I was seeing as I was taking this shot. #birds #snowflake #nature

Today's epiphany is a reminder that I can be an idiot too. Just learned that all these little dudes are Juncos, not Chickadees, as a friend had told me. Wouldn't have looked it up if it weren't for all the great bird photographers on Bluesky. Juncos are fun little buddies.

Helpful BlueSky tip: In Settings, Accessibility: You can turn on "require alt text before posting" so that you'll never forget to include alt text in images, and everyone can enjoy your content.

Insert your favorite action theme song. This squirrel is the coworker who interrupts you all day long with antics. Making out in the tree with another squirrel, crashing across the deck after them, flipping the seed tray off the table, flying from branch to fence top... It's Bond. Squirrel Bond.

This is hard to articulate but on this valentines day I'm thinking about how cool friendship is. Especially friendships maintained across the years, where you can feel that friendship and know it's there no matter where you and your friends may be or how long it's been. it's just such a nice thing.

A person changes their entire wardrobe, mannerisms, haircut, voice, loses friends and family, faces bullies daily, maybe goes on medication for the rest of their life, maybe surgery, all in sacrifice just to live a contented life. Ok you don't have to understand it, but how can you not respect it?

Big zoom with poor camera... There is a second disabled Chickadee. She has the same leg issue as Vern, holding her foot up and using her wings and tail to help balance when she squats or turns. She seems to already be adapting well. I wonder if Vern is mentoring her. Great flyer. I'll name her Devi.

10+yrs ago, I had an opportunity to work for SpaceX. It would've meant uprooting an established life, but awesome career move. Researched what it was like to work with Musk. Everyone thought I was crazy for turning it down. Every day I'm happier I did. Always research your potential employer.

When someone asks me "how have you been?"

I finally captured one of the Pine Siskins! They began visiting a month ago. They visit very randomly and always so briefly I don't have time to get the camera, but sometimes they have come in a flock of about a dozen. This one was alone, and stayed just long enough.

This Steller Jay thought he was being sneaky, stealing the squirrels' nuts. He was on the look out for me like a robber, flying away whenever I appeared through the window. The little birds were scared away, offended. Two thrushes teamed up to chase the Jay away and the little ones all came back.

Forget everything for a second to look at this perfect curled proboscis (that I just learned the name of). There are so many good, amazing and wonderful aspects of this world, if you just turn and look.
