After a couple of weeks of sickness in my household, it’s nice to have a few of days camping. A beautiful spot to rest…and learn a bit more Aramaic of course!

Twice a year I disrupt my usual language nerdery on social media to post about my side gig as ‘maker of epic birthday cakes for my kids’. I had a lot of fun with this particular one. It’s an Aussie classic—the swimming pool cake!

I get so excited seeing the new Greek and Hebrew students every year. Especially the ones who are learning a biblical language for the first time. I remember how much I struggled that first year and how far I’ve come. And I’m excited to see them taking that journey & to encourage them as they go.

Hello flash cards, my old friend. Learning Aramaic is definitely in progress. For those who learned Biblical Aramaic after Biblical Hebrew, what did you find challenging and what did you find easy? 📜

Finally got a new study space set up so I can study with (hopefully) fewer interruptions from kids than when I was in the main living area! Let the Aramaic learning *really* begin!

Found a gif that is my current vibe. I may have overcommitted on fun nerdy things. But on the plus side, I submitted my first conference paper abstract and it feels like a genuine milestone whatever the outcome!

Some of the best people I know. I’m excited to read Hebrew with this group every Monday morning this semester!

Biblical Hebrew people! What do you reasons do you give when someone asks you why they should learn Hebrew? Particularly if they can only choose one biblical language to learn (for now). There's plenty of Koine Greek advocates, but not as many BH ones. 📜

I'm very good at making plans and not following through, so I'm somewhat surprised that I think I'm really following through with learning Biblical Aramaic this year! A friend and I are going to learn it at the same time and today we made our plan and are starting this week!

Reading Hebrew manuscripts is a great way to appreciate how impressive it is that there weren’t a lot more scribal errors. Reading כ vs ב and ד vs ר can be really tricky!

Hebrew nerds! I need examples of a hiriq and qibbuts in accented syllables. So far I have דָּוִד and צַדִּקִים (I Kings 2:32). How would I even search for such a thing?

Today in my little summer Hebrew reading group, we wanted to check some pointing on the Leningrad Codex, and then collectively decided to just read straight from it for the rest of the time. It was quite challenging, especially when there was less familiar vocab. But it was also so much fun!

My week of Greek is over! I did a week long Koine reading class and it was intense. But it was also really fun and has somewhat inspired me to improve my Greek skills. It was really cool reading ancient stories about dogs and hyenas, and finally reading some papyri!

Well now I can say I’ve read a pig epitaph in Greek. Pretty cool.

My superpower is turning a draft that needs to be cut down into a longer draft

I’m getting to spend some time with Hebrew inscriptions at the moment. I’m appreciating working with Hebrew that isn’t familiar to me from an English translation. Highly recommend it!

Had a look at the texts for MALS Intermediate/Advanced Koine Greek next week. I learned a lot from just that. Mainly that I’m going to be in way over my head...

Currently trying to prepare myself for a week of reading Koine Greek at MALS next week. I have no idea what to expect! Will everyone be phenomenal? Will everyone be struggling through like this is only their 3rd year of Greek (like me)? I’m nervous but keen to improve my Greek in a fun way!

A lovely end to 2024. Spent some of the afternoon reading Hebrew with friends and then donned glow sticks to watch the early fireworks with the family.

As an Aussie, I’ve been obsessed with the idea of sweet potato with marshmallows ever since I learned of this side dish 3 years ago. I never had the chance to try it until tonight. My American bestie made it for me, and y’all. It did not disappoint.

I’ve come so close to starting on Biblical Aramaic in the past, but this time the textbook has been ordered and I’ve roped in a friend to learn alongside me. 2025 it’s happening! Thanks to all who have given suggestions and advice so far. I’m always open to advice!! 📜

Watching a training video for Hebrew manuscript transcription and it is so cool! There’s just something so beautiful about old manuscripts.

Now I have Hebrew & Greek under my belt, I’m considering taking the plunge to learn Biblical Aramaic. Does anyone have any good tips or favourite resources or what-not-to-do’s? I learned Hebrew & Greek with a fab teacher, so this will be my first self-directed language attempt! 📜

Hot tip for starting out teaching your kids Hebrew: Remember to tell them to read right to left. It makes quite a huge difference if you forget to do this.

This is awesome!

You’ve heard of Spotify Wrapped, but all the cool kids are doing Anki Wrapped this year 😎 This year I completed all of the vocabulary in the New Testament. 2025 will be a big year for Hebrew Bible and LXX vocab. Should’ve started this years ago!

The Return of the King

I love my nerd family. After a couple of weeks away from my kids for conferences, we are now cuddling on the couch while learning the Hebrew alephbet. I’m hoping this is the time their interest sticks! Biblingo has made the interface much more kid-appealing since the last time we tried!

Pulling my hair out, trying to sign up for a Biblingo Black Friday deal. There's just nowhere to add the BF code before inserting bank details, and that feels too late. Anyone any ideas? ✝️
