This exquisite work is a preparatory sketch for a sleeping soldier in Ubaldo Gandolfi's monumental fresco of the Resurrection, (c1760) painted in the eleventh chapel of the Portico di San Luca, Bologna in Italy.

Parish notice: am looking for a couple of people (ideally grad students with pol science or history background) to help me out with some research for a project I’m working on. Will pay for the time. DM if interested or send on to someone if you think would fit the bill.

Taking Britain out of the Erasmus+ programme was a huge mistake. Labour must rejoin and accept the EU’s offer of a youth mobility scheme

Snapdragons are my favorite flower to grow. They do however produce seed pods that look like the screaming skulls of the damned.

It’s that time of year when a strong cup of coffee is more necessary than usual. Yet anyone looking for a caffeine hit to help shake off any Christmas overindulgence could soon find themselves having to dig a bit deeper into their pocket

In Stanley Spencer's paintings of flowers, they are usually brought to life with feathery strokes and delicate colours but with this amaryllis (1951) he's painted it as he often did a human figure, boldly with strong, flat colours and with his customary near-obsessive precision.

Flat-faced dogs like bulldogs and pugs may look cute, but their shortened snouts can cause serious health issues. Learn the science behind these breeds at Lynn Museum’s Woof: A Celebration of Dogs

Happy 5th of December to all my fellow Dutchies. Traditionally celebrated as the feast of St Nicholas in the Netherlands, it has become increasingly controversial in recent years. Down the road from me, Carcassonne celebrates St Nicholas this Saturday with an annual torch procession. #Dutch

You’re not violating a reading rule if you opt not to finish a book that's not resonating with you. Life is finite and we thus have a finite number of books to read. Reading shouldn’t be a chore. You needn’t feel guilty for ensuring that your time reading is spent reading things that you love.

“It’s not Trump's doing, it was already there.”

This story from the Idaho Capital Sun seems significant: "Pete Hegseth, president-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for secretary of Defense, has close ties to an Idaho-based Christian nationalist church that aims to turn America into a theocracy."
