We’ll be tabling at White Plaza this afternoon — come by and let us know what issues you want Stanford faculty to prioritize and what actions you would like us to take!

Not only have they been terminating hundreds of NSF grants, they’re now not awarding any new grants, either. This is devastating for scientists and the institutions where we work.

A new policy from the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) will end billions of dollars of funding to laboratories and hospitals outside the United States, imperiling thousands of projects on topics such as emerging infectious diseases and cancer. https://go.nature.com/4jEDppr

@maddow.msnbc.com highlights the efforts by Big Ten schools and others to join forces in a "mutual defense compact" against Donald Trump's attacks on higher education. #StrongerTogether

"Disease outbreaks that start anywhere in the world can reach our shores in hours...If the United States pulled back all of its global health funding — which was US$12 billion in 2024 — roughly 25 million people could die in the next 15 years" www.nature.com/articles/d41...

We are delighted at this win for Justice!!! AAUP v Rubio survives the Trump administration’s motion to dismiss.

A reminder of why I do what I do. Jaylon—a former student and PoliSci major at Stanford—joins the DEI convo after reading my piece in the Stanford Daily. Proud to see him step into the arena, calling out the factless claims and flimsy arguments of DEI’s critics. stanforddaily.com/2025/04/30/t...

@acls1919.bsky.social, the AHA, & @modernlanguage.bsky.social filed a lawsuit in federal district court today, seeking to reverse the recent actions of the NEH to devastate the agency, including the elimination of grant programs, staff, and entire divisions and programs. 🗃️

With a torrent of executive orders, President Donald Trump has turned U.S. science upside down in his first 100 days, and the onslaught isn’t likely to end soon. scim.ag/3Yti8Xg

Check out the latest episode of the AAUP Presents special series, "Academic Freedom on the Line." In this episode, host Vineeta Singh speak with a coalition of student leaders actively organizing against state-level DEI bans in Texas and Kentucky. Listen and subscribe: www.aaup.org/news/our-pod...

Declining childhood vaccination rates will lead to more frequent and larger outbreaks of previously eliminated infections like #measles, findings show. Read the full JAMA Original Investigation mentioned in this @wsj.com editorial. jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

May Day is not officially acknowledged in the U.S. because of what historians say is an ongoing resistance to unity among the working class. This resistance is prompting protesters to take action on Thursday, regardless.

Misinformation ranks high among the many research areas President Donald Trump’s administration has targeted for deep cuts. scim.ag/4jBn6K7

Here or by Podcast, Stacey Abrams explores academic freedom and the recent exceptional attacks on higher ed with Wesleyan President Michael Roth and Barnard Professor Nara Milanich. The interview gives voice to so much of what we are also experiencing! @wesleyanaaup.bsky.social @staceyabrams.com

I just met with legal counsel for my constituent, Dr. Badar Khan Suri. Dr. Suri is a global conflict scholar at Georgetown who was detained without explanation by masked agents outside his Arlington home, then disappeared without due process to a prison 1,300 miles from his wife and children. 1/

Emerging infectious diseases are a real and present danger. Note that there was an Ebola outbreak in January and February of this year. Federally funded research keeps Americans safe and healthy. www.wired.com/story/hhs-ni...

Note that this groundbreaking discovery made at @stanfordmedicine.bsky.social was made possible by no fewer than six NIH grants. There is enormous public value that comes from government-supported research. med.stanford.edu/news/all-new...

We see you Kennesaw State University Faculty Senate! 1st in the South to pass a resolution establishing a mutual defense compact w/ other institutions. "Whereas, Faculty members must organize to effectively counter political attacks on higher education & defend #academicfreedom..." #defendhighered

Hoo boy. The House plan for higher ed would be very bad for schools like mine, Montclair State, with a large number of students reliant on Pell Grants with new qualification limits, caps, and pared down loan programs. www.chronicle.com/newsletter/d...

Federal agents have detained international students and faculty—but we’re targeting the wrong people. International students are not a threat. In 2023–24, they contributed $43.8 billion to the US economy—an engine of prosperity, innovation, and soft power.

An important story. At least 1200 students have similarly had their lives and studies upended by visa revocations. Most have been unwilling to speak with reporters. All face a precarious future, despite their visas being reinstated.

Tomorrow! NEH appeal process!

Now do this for NIH and NSF.

“We are Jewish academics who have devoted our lives to teaching and research on college campuses. If there were a pervasive culture of antisemitism on campuses, we would know about it, and we would fight it. But we have observed no such thing.” academeblog.org/2025/04/25/i...

This judgment would imply all the other impounded funds, including grant funding, support for US AID, and support for local and state public health departments should be restored.

Canceling these types of awards will affect the scientific community for decades. We will lose these young scientists, either to other fields or to other countries. Either would be a loss for Americans.

Universities have an obligation to protect their students and scholars from unlawful government interference

Just Now: a federal judge ruled that our case (AAUP v. Rubio) seeking to block the Trump admin from carrying out large-scale arrests, detentions, & deportations of noncitizen students & faculty members who participate in pro-Palestinian protests can go forward. @knightcolumbia.org

Join ACH, AHA, & MLA to talk about the appeals process for terminated NEH grants. Why is it important to appeal and how might you go about doing so? 11am Eastern on Wed, April 30. Please share!

“Our campuses must be institutions of learning, critical inquiry, & inclusion—not instruments of surveillance & state-sponsored oppression. The presence & involvement of ICE on our campuses undermines the very mission of our higher ed system.” — @unitedfacultyfl.bsky.social

Every dollar spent by the NIH returns almost $2.50 in economic benefits. Canceling $2 billion in grants actually costs us almost $5 billion.

The National Institutes of Health, the largest funder of biomedical research in the world, has fired 1,300 employees and cancelled more than $2 billion in federal research grants. https://cbsn.ws/4daiCrv

Again, my wife lost her excellent job at a nonprofit Seattle hospital because the trump administration simply stopped paying medicaid reimbursements at the beginning of the year, throwing it into complete financial turmoil the cuts are already here
