YouTube does feed me rather peculiarly interesting videos. This one about a heated feud by linguists about the features of a language only spoken by about 300 people deep in the Amazon. I enjoy writing songs in different languages but will not be attempting this one! youtu.be/DQnyh_1kqy8?...

Happy to learn that the (andante) movement of GAIA'S SONG was selected for a Soundcloud playlist. #158 on Study Symphonies. soundcloud.com/stanley-gril...

The occasions are infrequent, but every once in a while I do wind up listening to classical period music. Over the past week, I’ve listened to several complete sets of Schubert piano sonatas. I think this one, performed by Wilhem Kempff, is my favorite. music.amazon.com/albums/B0012...

SYMPHONY OF SIGHS on Apple Music. Music composed in support of Ukraine.

Happy birthday, Alban Berg! Apparently, the premiere of this piece was another famous example of a riot during the performance. youtu.be/3KtRsTR0qyE?...

Yesterday I put the finishing touches on a string quartet based on old Jewish folk tunes. Today I opened an email from a stranger sharing this link to an old Jewish song from Poland. The universe is full of strange billiard balls rolling around in all directions. youtu.be/s_iEzoMC4xg?...

Hmm. Last night I fell asleep listening to an album of Schubert's Complete Piano Sonatas but then woke up realizing I was listening to unfamiliar music. My Dover volume purports to be complete but only has 15 - whereas the Endres album has 21! music.youtube.com/playlist?lis...

Hot off the press! Just finished today. A new string quartet (20 min) based on folk tunes selected from a book entitled "A Treasury of Jewish Folksong" which I found in a thrift shop in LA's Little Ethiopia on a recent visit there. www.stangrillcomposer.com/compositions... #classical #music

I think I just reached the final bar (maybe) of a new string quartet based on Jewish folk songs. Now, it needs to sit a bit... In five movements - Lullabies, Children's Songs, Love Songs, Partisan Songs and Songs of Israel.

Today's YouTube discovery was piano music by Nicolai Shcherbachov, apparently associated with the Russian Five. Happy to learn that there are quite a few scores of his to be found on IMSLP. Looks like I've got my sight-reading dance card filled in for the next week. imslp.org/wiki/Categor...

A good friend shared this link with me after learning that I was working on a new string quartet based on Jewish folk tunes. The unmistakable voice of Paul Robeson. And such a good Yiddish accent! youtu.be/LifT4MzpY2Y?...

Out walking and listening to this compendium of Cesar Franck’s complete chamber music, I kept thinking how so not French this music is. He writes like a German. Wonderful album. music.amazon.com/albums/B09SZ...

Reminded by this photo of the time I toured Versaille. Until then, I hadn’t appreciated what led the French revolutionaries to such extremes of violence. But seeing the outlandish displays of wealth, power and egoism at Versaille made me say, ah ha, now I get it.

Many years ago, I wrote a string quartet based on Appalachian folk tunes. More recently, I wrote another based on Ukrainian folk songs. Today, I started one that will incorporate melodies from a book of Jewish folk songs that I found by chance during my recent visit to Los Angeles.
