This is the 1st podcast that became more timely in 7 days since we posted it. I detail the concerns of many who objected to what they saw in recent years. Can what’s happening now be justified? But the question remains: Can physicians stand up to authoritarianism? youtu.be/x1iwqRgUPpo?...

🚨The record of physicians standing up for our values as healers under authoritarian regimes is not good, historically speaking In this podcast, we ask if docs in the US will do better, this time around “On Becoming a Healer” podcast streams on all services - links below /1

I am thankful to be honored with the award and to work with a wonderful cadre of addiction and pain scientists and clinicians at UAB

Looking forward to @lizchiarello.bsky.social visit to Pitt next week. In the meantime, listen to a masterful interview by @stefankertesz.bsky.social on this podcast onbecomingahealer.libsyn.com/caring-for-p...

1/Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs draw physicians into adopting the logic of law enforcement- That’s the case made by our podcast guest @lizchiarello.bsky.social in our new episode from On Becoming a Healer Listen here: pod.link/healer/episo... (I’ll post the YouTube link next)

Let’s run through what DoGE has already done. Huge cuts to social security. Are your checks coming? Decimating cancer cure research. Huge cuts to VA health care Govt building projects across country are grinding to a half because they’re firing everyone at GA the people who run the projects

DOGE is taking a chainsaw to care of Veterans, per NYT & NBC -firing staff who purchase medical supplies, schedule appointments -ending clinical trials -ending sterilizing services for equipment -ending air quality & safety (This is *only* what is publicly reported) www.nbcnews.com/politics/dog...

Fencing can be a guide for moments like we face right now Don’t let them intimidate you Retreat if you must…. but stay close, so you hit with decision when your opponent errs, as they always do I am on the left and the red light is my touch

Reposting my colleague and fellow federal physician, I *chose* to help people leave homelessness behind I *chose* to commit to preventing suicide among Veterans and non-Veterans alike

Congrats to @ATaylorKelley and @DrAudreyJones @vasaltlakecity @SLC_IDEAS for being awarded Collaborative Interprofessional Research and Clinical LEarning in Addictions VA (#CIRCLE) fellowship. A new site for #IAFAT. medicine.utah.edu/internal-med...

I'm a federal employee for ~25 years. I could have been paid 2-3x more in the private sector. I choose government service as a physician to take care of Veterans who are homeless & who have substance use disorders. Many colleagues have followed me into this service. I am a proud federal employee.

I was interviewed for Undark- The quick fix mentality has led to enormous trauma for patients with pain and disability.

1/I am so thankful to @undarkmag for our interview on how opioid prescribing changes relate to the key question: “How are we really going to take care of people with disability and pain who have been traumatized by our own health care system?”

Did you know that AMERSA hosts events like free advocacy-themed webinars and advocacy ‘office hours’ that may be able to help you advance your advocacy priorities in 2025? Hey. This is important #ViktorFrankl

“Prescribing suzetrigine following surgeries ‘isn’t going to substantively change the amount of addiction in society’” @stefankertesz.bsky.social ie, profitable molecular discoveries aren’t the cure for social problems www.washingtonpost.com/health/2025/...

New 🔊 podcast ! In December, the 3 organizations that oversee med school education announced a new set of competencies med students should achieve A new one requires integrating patient *context* into care decisions We explore what that means in ~On Becoming a Healer ~ pod.link/healer/episo...

Many clinicians do short-term periods of medical service overseas, sometimes in places with limited resources Sometimes, despite good intentions, we do a lousy job. In our latest podcast we ask Dr. John Lawrence how to do it right pod.link/healer/episo...

Random immigrant and child of immigrant (aka “anchor baby”)

New JAMA Internal Med study shows that when an entire healthcare system was intensively reducing #opioid doses on all patients those volunteering for a clinical trial encouraging dose reduction also reduced doses There was no major benefit or harm to participants jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

Besides the Cato Institute, no major think tank is discussing the wide ranging loss of care for patients who have pain and have historically received prescribed opioids. Ending health care for large populations is, dare I say, bad. Thanks to CatoInstitute www.cato.org/events/pain-...

1/Is it really the case that there are now 6.1 million Americans with prescription opioid use disorder, rather than 1.6 million, based on national surveys? Authors of a recent NEJM piece say "yes" but sadly don't draw useful implications for care or policy. Let's review www.nejm.org/doi/full/10....
