#classicalmusic #opera In a music appreciation class I was surprised to learn physicist Helmholtz's theory of color. Stare at a color and you'll soon see it's opposite. It was like Debussy: two notes played loudly together might sound awful, but softly they sound beautiful. Finally, I understand.

Great overview of the extent of what tax-payer funded NOAA provides as a public good and how replicating its extensive services and capacity would be massively difficult, far less reliable, and less trustworthy if left to the private sector. 🧪 📈 🛟 policysky polisky sociology

China’s DeepSeek-R1 AI model proves the West is losing its AI edge due to weak policy and industry complacency. Urgent action is needed: stronger R&D funding smarter export controls, competitive academic salaries, and a public-private AI strategy on the scale of the Manhattan Project #AI #Geopolitics

As a biologist, this really tugs at my heart stings. The worst time for the environment. Selfish people are doing what they do best. 😥😔

Really very much on topic for me. Federico Faggin explains what one experiences and feels is the case. Consciousness is fundamental, it exists as a field from which space and time emerge etc. Oh, and the unconditional great love in the form of light epiphany! youtu.be/0FUFewGHLLg?...

The Earth had its warmest January on record, despite La Niña conditions in the Pacific Ocean that tend to lower the global temperature. 🧐

For the replies, it's clear that many people don't understand ocean chemistry and need an explainer on marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR). But there's a coup, and I'm tired. So here's NOAA's website on the subject. Check it out before it's taken down.

Bureaucracy can be a pain in the ass & needs to be weeded, but the level of ignorance here is breathtaking. The only reason America can swing between massively different political regimes w/o disruption to daily life comes from stability of public servants working long-term jobs.

The most iconic figure in the environmental sciences is the Keeling Curve, the CO₂ record from Mauna Loa, Hawaii. @noaa.gov had a wonderful site where you could visualize and download these data, and now it's just gone. These data belong to us and we should not let this happen!

Very concerning!

Thank goodness for humour! youtu.be/zkwRyh9m8Xk?...
