They ended up with 4.97%, hence out of parliament, meaning that CDU/CSU and SPD have a majority, and CDU/CSU, SPD and the Greens would have the 2/3 majority needed to change the Constitution (e.g. debt brake).

At first glance, Hierve el Agua in Oaxaca, Mexico, might look like a cascading waterfall, but it is actually a natural wonder of "petrified waterfalls". These rock formations are made of minerals deposited over thousands of years by spring water flowing down the cliffs. 🧵⬇️ (1/5)

Germany 🇩🇪 goes to the polls 🗳️ today. Perhaps the single most important thing for Europe to watch tonight: will AfD & Linke pick up 1/3 of the seats, enabling them to block constitutional reform. Dreams of bold steps in EU integration needed to respond to 🇺🇸 🇺🇦 🇷🇺, esp. on defense, may get shattered.

IfW analysis: Replacing US aid to UA would cost Europe only around 0.12% of GDP. Replacing the US contribution to conventional NATO deterrence, on the other hand, would require around 300k additional troops. Likely requires 3.5% GDP defence spending, rather than 2. www.ifw-kiel.de/fileadmin/Da...

Whew, what a lead

Is #China really as dominant in scientific #research as it might appear? Shumin Qiu, Claudia Steinwender, & Pierre Azoulay find that after adjusting citation counts for home bias, China is in fourth place globally - behind the US, UK, and Germany. cepr.org/voxeu/column... #EconSky #science

The German income tax system is too complicated. What could we do to improve it? Nadine Riedel, Martin Jacob and I wrote down a few ideas for @taxfoundation.bsky.social Europe. taxfoundation.org/blog/germany...

Why is the Army tagging a person who is not only not anywhere in the military chain of command, not an elected or appointed-confirmed government official, but whose illegal directions from the president have nothing to do with base renaming?

There you have it. The Economic Policy Uncertainty Index (www.policyuncertainty.com) just hit an all-time high, surpassing its previous high from May 2020 - the teeth of the #COVID pandemic. Consequences: worse investment climate, higher risk premia, (likely) higher interest rates...

So you're telling me that Europe has spent over $140 billion in Ukriane aid, will have to take the lead in deterring Russia in the future, will have to deploy its militaries as peacekeepers AND, amid that, it's not getting a say in talks with Putin?

I am pretty sure Accounting/Finance/Econ paper will increase in length because every paper will now have a sentence that reads "We exclude the years 2025 and 2026 and the results are unchanged." Similar to the financial crisis/2008 exclusions.

Oder zumindest in "wissenschaftsnahe" Bereiche, ja. Aber die reinen Titelpromotionen sind ein großes Problem.

Admittedly a large find for #FindsFriday The Carpow Logboat recovered from the River Tay near Perth 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 in 2001 is Late Bronze Age in date (c 1000BC, radiocarbon date). Made from a huge oak, it was quite sophisticated with a transom. You can see it in the Perth Museum along with the Stone of Destiny
