Assuming the federal government still contributes to unemployment insurance!

It’s such a mess. The calls I’m on with folks about trying to restart HIV services at clinics are gut wrenching. You can’t just shut down and restart these systems like a light switch and I suspect that some of these barriers with federal payments are intentional.

So, they could reinstate those people. But the hardest part is the work on the ground. Many small orgs in country did let people go, and those systems are HARD to restart. But intl. aid folks are creative and tenacious. It won’t be pretty but it can happen.

Technically they put the federal USAID staff on leave and restricted all their access. Many could be reinstated. However, contractors and grantees did a larger portion of this work, and many of those staff have been furloughed or laid off. But most have not found other jobs.

Definitely not coping. It’s so bleak right now! Some of this is grief and the only way through grief is to allow yourself space to feel it. Forcing myself to do joyful things like time with friends, watching comedy, or swimming have helped me regulate. Take a break from the news if you can!

@altnih4science.bsky.social - any word on whether the temporary pause that was to be lifted on 2/1 is still in effect?

This point needs to be elevated every day as we discuss the value of foreign aid! I wrote a blog post related to this and the critical contributions that H.I.V. patients make to ending the epidemic: yoursay.plos.org/2022/06/we-n...

It is so surreal. I felt myself get angry when my spouse asked about grocery shopping. My brain went to “grocery shopping?! This is an emergency! They are literally tearing down USAID.” And then I realized that we do, in fact, still need groceries and should buy avocados while we still can.
