This is Chapter 4 of The Next Civil War. Chapter 5 is the country breaking up.

"The chaos has just begun. Threats to sovereignty clarify the mind. America is a dying star—set to explode or collapse. Either way, Canada and the world must keep their distance." #Never51 #CanadaUSRelations #TeamCanada 🇨🇦

@Independent: Under Trump, the US has proved it can't be trusted as an ally or trade partner, argues Stephen Marche, Canadian author of ‘The Next Civil War’. But, his country is feeling strangely confident as it heads into a David and Goliath struggle: https://t.co/yaVUE5Er

In The Independent, why Canada will never be the 51st State. www.independent.co.uk/news/world/a...

This has to be the most intense news week of my life when nothing happened.

"Tariffs are expensive. Trade wars are expensive. But not being American? That's priceless." www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYS_...

Proper banana republic shit.

There is a guy (Stephen Marche) on CBC right now who had a great quote about how Canadians are rallying together to defend our sovereignty: Tariffs are expensive Trade Wars are expensive But not being American is priceless

“What you’re dealing with here is a carnival barker… the almost unanimous response of the Canadian people is heartening. I think we all know we’re going to suffer here. But the truth is that tariffs and trade wars are expensive, but not being American? That’s priceless.”— @stephenmarche.bsky.social

I just finished "The Next Civil War: dispatches from the American Future" by @stephenmarche.bsky.social . It is a blistering, painful, frustrating, angering, necessary read.

Important insights from @stephenmarche.bsky.social @theatlantic.com "Politics has become an offshoot of spectacle. Rule by performers is distinct from autocracy. The ruling performers serve the narrative needs of their fans first and foremost." www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

The United States gets weaker every day, basically without interruption. I don't think it will be four years before they are no longer the most powerful country in the world, and everybody knows it.

What rhymes with slump?

“Rule by performers is distinct from autocracy,” writes Stephen Marche. “The ruling performers serve the narrative needs of their fans first and foremost. Policy will always be an addendum to the show”:

The reason the crisis in America is so unprecedented, and so confounding, is that it is the first time in history that entertainment networks have overwhelmed the political structure. America has amused itself to death. Wrote about it for The Atlantic. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

Mike Myers, Canadian legend, on SNL tonight.

“Resistance is always creative. Resistance is always affirmative.” The discussion is dark, hopeful, and brilliant. Thank you, @timothysnyder.bsky.social @stephenmarche.bsky.social

This piece by @stephenmarche.bsky.social on the conundrums and tall poppy syndrome of the Albertan identity (as well as the Saskatchewan and Manitoban identity for that matter) is truly excellent.

My piece, in the Globe, about the identity paradox of being an Albertan who doesn't live in Alberta. Our next Prime Minister, and the one after that, will also live this paradox. www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/arti...

Are U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to annex Canada realistic? Here what Stephen Marche, the author of “The Next Civil War” has to say about that. youtu.be/VSdXiqovYeU?...

. @macleans has just dropped the must-have accessory for our moment. You really should buy one. canadianmags.ca/products/mac...

Over two years after publication, The Next Civil War enters the Canadian bestseller lists.

Tariffs will pour gasoline on this fire. Absolutely ripe for Canadian and Mexican and European and Chinese countermeasures.

Inflation picked up unexpectedly in January. This was the biggest one-month increase in overall consumer prices since August 2023, and the biggest one-month increase in core prices since April 2023. #NumbersDay

Stephen Harper was, in his time, the most pro-American Prime Minister in Canadian history. He now says that Canada should "accept any level of damage" to resist America. The consensus in this country is total.

Tim Snyder and Stephen Marche have written great books on the erosion of democracy. "What gives me hope is that, in autocracies, people feel less afraid protesting in the streets with others than watching television alone at home. That strength comes from being together." ✊🏻 youtu.be/vbqVUKgzT9o?...

This is in Chapter 3 of The Next Civil War.

Defenestration imminent.

This may well be the best essay I've written, but almost nobody will read it because it's about Covid. It's actually about how nobody wants to read about Covid, even though it's changed us more than any other event in my lifetime. Bit of a Catch-22. reviewcanada.ca/magazine/202...

For the Literary Review of Canada, I wrote about the first days of Covid. No other catastrophe during my lifetime has generated such a stark contrast between its impact and the poverty of its discourse. It changed our intimate lives, like how we shit, but we don't talk about it.
