Excited to record a Daubenton’s bat and a serotine in my local park soon after sunset. The bat season is upon us! @batconservation.bsky.social

“I felt physically sick watching the president of the US yell at a brave ally, fulminating in the Oval Office as if he were an addled old man shaking his fist at a TV. Zelensky has endured tragedies & risked his life in ways that… Trump and Vance cannot imagine.” www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

One for @batconservation.bsky.social, and I have to thank the lovely Rachel for this photo - who knew that Christopher Columbus' tomb in Seville was a bat fest?!? Not me.

At last! Beaver releases into wild to be allowed in England for first time in centuries Big congrats to the rewilders, nature-friendly farmers, & campaigners who’ve fought for this for so long. And credit where it’s due - thanks to Labour for pressing go! www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Certain black humour in Bezos’s instructions. “From now on, you are only allowed to write about freedom.”

James Webb Satellite took a fantastic shot of the Planet Saturn with it's Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI). This is just an Amazing shot that shows the planet and the rings in brilliant detail.

STOP Splat the Bat! Here is some (serious) international guidance I helped with, on preventing collisions of bats on roads and railways. Step 1 . Avoid woodlands and other places with loads of bats. 🦇🦤 #HS2 #batshed @craigbennett3.bsky.social www.eurobats.org/sites/defaul...

“Today’s waste trade is an opportunistic bonanza, an escape valve of environmental responsibility that profits off routing detritus of every conceivable variety to places that are in no position to take it.” www.nytimes.com/2025/02/14/o...

NOT NOW, BATS

“These results continue to challenge human uniqueness,” Piel said. “One by one, the things we long held as distinct to us are at least being blurred, if not being completely disputed.”

Read the details-- 2022 abduction, forced confession, then 2yrs incommunicado, then authorities claim they've just arrested her! as usual, russia's kangaroo courts are an affront to law. If russia keeps the occupied territories, Ukrainians will continue being subjected to this injustice.

🦇 hibernation survey with London Bat Group in Highgate tunnels. A Natterer’s bat is visible in the pool of torchlight. @batconservation.bsky.social

Thought-provoking… cc @carlsayer.bsky.social

Friday SCOOP: @vox.com has learned that USFWS has frozen its vast portfolio of international conservation grants. This is far beyond the scope of USAID-funded work and will inevitably harm wildlife internationally and in the US. @benjij.bsky.social has the story: www.vox.com/down-to-eart...

Complicated… www.thetimes.com/article/98c1...

I was just told that I have to remove “climate” from the title of an ongoing grant if I want to keep it. And publications from that grant cannot include “climate” and other forbidden words. I can’t believe I’m writing this from the United States of America. #AcademicSky

A Russian singer-songwriter Vadim Stroykin who has spoken out against the war in Ukraine, “fell” out of a window while security officials were raiding his apartment

1/ The UK government’s ‘growth vs newts and bats’ agenda has sparked a bit of a ‘Team Bat Team Newt’ response It’s heartening and uplifting, but it plays right into their hands 🧵 Graphic: @rosie400.bsky.social

Very disappointing. Confused and wrong statements about "introducing new species" plays to the NFU audience but is at odds with reality. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Hairy-footed Flower Bee, Anthophora plumped, Derbyshire garden this morning, rather early here in the north midlands. #Hymenoptera

Hardly new info, but BSky should know: Warsaw's water quality is monitored by eight clams with magnets attached to their shells. If contamination in the water causes the clams to close, the magnets trigger an alarm and shut off the city's water supply. Thank you, little guardian molluscs. 🧪🌏🚰

The most iconic figure in the environmental sciences is the Keeling Curve, the CO₂ record from Mauna Loa, Hawaii. @noaa.gov had a wonderful site where you could visualize and download these data, and now it's just gone. These data belong to us and we should not let this happen!

Two fragments of species rich lowland heath will be linked by a wildlife bridge over the M25. Such heathland, home to sand lizards, nightjars, adders & silver-studded blue butterflies has shrunk by 85% in Surrey, into disconnected pockets. 🧵1/3 www.icevirtuallibrary.com/doi/epdf/10....

bats are immunologically "special", but bat species also differ in their immune response. we gather evidence for interspecific variation in bat immunity, propose hypotheses, and outline future comparative directions. i've really enjoyed working with this ECR team. ecoevorxiv.org/repository/v...

“Our study suggests that hedgerows should be conserved and restored as key elements to support a higher bat activity. This would also benefit other important groups of animals such as bees and birds along with the ecosystem services they provide.” esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

This looks... brilliant @carlsayer.bsky.social www.theguardian.com/science/2025...

Rare bats and biodiverse woodland cannot simply be moved, whatever the UK government claims. What should have moved in the HS2 debacle was the route of the line. I wonder why major construction companies preferred to propose a £100M tunnel instead? 🤔 💷🦇🦤. @craigbennett3.bsky.social

A useful post from @phillipspobrien.bsky.social This chart is worth remembering when you read headlines saying that Ukraine is crumbling:

“On the chopping block are hundreds — and potentially thousands — of park rangers who respond to medical emergencies, as well as visitor center employees and the crews that clean bathrooms and empty garbage cans.” www.latimes.com/california/s...

"It’s not the first time we’ve heard newts being used as the scapegoat for development delays. But, let’s be clear, it’s simply not true." Read our CEO @jeremybiggs.bsky.social' response to the Chancellor's speech on proposed planning reforms. freshwaterhabitats.org.uk/news/are-new...

On request from Latvian authorities, Norwegian Police and Coast Guard has brought in the Norwegian flagged, and owned, merchant ship Silver Dania to Tromsø, on suspicion of damaging a fiber cable in the Baltic. The entire crew are Russian citizens. www.nrk.no/tromsogfinnm...

“The Russians in their haste left behind a field kitchen, a mound of books, encrypted communications manuals and a framed portrait of Stalin’s secret police chief, Lavrentiy Beria.”

“For the Chechen and North Caucasian militants who helped topple [Assad] there are three main possibilities worth addressing: staying in Syria, moving to Ukraine, or trying to bring the fight back home to the Caucasus.” (Numbers are apparently in the hundreds.) ridl.io/what-future-...

Fruit-eating bats are important for maintaining forest health with seed dispersal. For decades, researchers have explored ways to harness this as for reforestation. One method has been to use fruit-derived essential oils to attract bats to deforested sites, where their seed-loaded feces may help.
