Erratic earnings across a year are more common for young workers, part-time workers, low-paid workers, workers on temporary contracts, and workers in hospitality. One-in-four (24 per cent) young people (aged 20-24) experience erratic pay over a year.

Kudos to our colleagues at LIS and LSE! Thought-provoking papers, informed discussions, new faces ... and all brilliantly organized. Stay tuned for LIS' announcement about the posting of all of the slides. @lisdata.bsky.social, @lseinequalities.bsky.social, @stone-lis.bsky.social 👇👇👇

📢 Last chance to register! We're hosting an online webinar TOMORROW for people interested in the think tank sector, aimed particularly at those from under-represented groups. Find out more and sign up here👇 buff.ly/3CYMwky

Was Michael Gove right? There's a brave question to start a thread about my latest post... But in the current turmoil it might help liberals to think through the limits of 'expert-led politics', which is but one branch of liberalism. 🧵1/n benansell.substack.com/p/politics-w...

What do we know about volatility in people's wages? Lots from rich, small-scale, studies, but not from large-scale data-sets. Join us on Tuesday as we share work on a newly-available administrative source covering over 250,000 people's monthly and weekly pay cheques over 5 years.

Memorable event in Luxembourg! Chico Ferreira & I had the pleasure of talking with @brankomilan.bsky.social about "Visions of #Inequality". Merci to our excellent hosts: @lisdata.bsky.social, @liser.lu, @uni.lu. Brilliant audience of about 150. @stone-lis.bsky.social @lseinequalities.bsky.social

Pubmed down in US. Anything in the US is now unsafe. Need to move all public databases to Europe ASAP.

I loathe these dangerous cars. Why aren’t they taxed to high heaven?

A pleasure to supervise Magdalena ... who's already doing well in her new job in IADB. Hurrah

Devastating news at IZA yesterday. More than 25 years of hard work, earned reputation, and valuable institutional knowledge and public good provision wiped out with a single stroke. It’s hard to find the words.

Awful timing given the funding meltdown in the USA IZA shutting down its institute in Bonn Hoping to maintain the scholar network www.deutsche-post-stiftung.org/media/202502...

Saddened by the news that @iza.org is closing down by the end of this year 💔 It's hard to overstate the importance of this organisation for the field of labour economics, and empirical micro at large I definitely wouldn't be where I am without IZA and the opportunities it offered to PhD students 🙏

At a London bus stop. The Brits are telling it like it is.

Hello BlueSky! We are happy to launch the LONDON INEQUALITY NETWORK (LIN). The network is an initiative to foster interactions across UK-based researchers working on inequality. We organize an academic workshop once a term to enhance connections and collaborations across the network.

We streamlined six new DID-like estimators and created this tutorial for implementation in R. yiqingxu.org/packages/fec... Hope you no longer need to spend months figuring out what these estimators are and how to use them.

The Spanish economy grew more than any major economy last year. Why is Spain doing so well? One key reason is immigration. Keir Starmer and other leaders of low-grow economies running out of ideas should take note. My opinion piece @theguardian.com www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Thread here on last week's LPC report. Something I wanted to add: LPC don't mention the increase in employer NICs coming alongside min wage increase in April. It's not mentioned because LPC's report is about the thinking underpinning their rates recommendations, which came *before* the budget 1/n

So @chrischirp.bsky.social is logging Trump's actions under data categories derived from the typical behaviour of authoritarian states as part of an ongoing project. The conclusions are naturally alarming. open.substack.com/pub/christin...

As any good psychologist, I barely ever read anything written by people outside of my field and have no idea who most of them are. But the first time I read something by Manski I immediately knew that he must be an absolute legend, and he hasn't disappointed so far.

The @resmedia.bsky.social is looking for a new data editor for the RES journals. Deadline to express interest is 28 February.

@poid-lse.bsky.social is recruiting a research assistant to work with me and Steve Machin on UK spatial disparities in private and public capital stocks, self-employment and productivity. Details here: jobs.lse.ac.uk/Vacancies/W/...
