Michael Jordan is insanely competitive But he didn't win his 1st championship until his 7th year when Phil Jackson started coaching The Zen balanced out the competitiveness just enough Greatness is balancing contrasts so they don't destroy us. Here's how: thegrowtheq.com/the-messines...

If you have more to lose, you are more likely to be motivated by fear of failure instead of a drive to win. When we fear failure, we play conservative and are less likely to take risks. Part of reaching your potential lies in giving yourself the permission to fail.

Team culture does not form during meetings or scheduled activity. It forms during the in between moments. The cool down conversations, the shared anxiety while awaiting a race. Research on the military it came from “the shared nothingness” where you get to see a person as more than just their job

We're social creatures. Online communication is great. But it takes much longer to create genuine bonding and connection. We utilize what we hear, see, and sense as signals of connection. It's why we mirror the movements of others when conversing:

Here's the truth: Training Zones are a rule of thumb. Nearly everyone doesn't have a physiological anchor. It's just a way to categorize training that is mostly arbitrary. It's no different than Igloi classifying intensities as: Easy-Fresh-Good-Hard. It's useful. But not a law.

We have this idea that people need to be pushed or have a carrot dangled in front of them, or else they'd all sit at home watching Netflix. That's wrong. The inner drive matters more than the outer. Allow people the space to develop it.

The best workout that few include: Warm-up. Find a moderate hill. Sprint up it for ~8 seconds. Take a long recovery (2+min). Repeat 4 to 8 times. Relatively safe speed/power development that works for endurance athletes and general fitness.

5 key ideas that allow us to perform to our potential and get the most out of ourselves: 1. We self-sabotage to protect our ego 2. Balance exploration & commitment 3. Our environment tells us who we should be 4. Care deeply but let go 5. Belong instead of fit in nextbigideaclub.com/magazine/cha...

When I was young, I'd run twice on Christmas, 9 miles in the morning, 7 in the evening. I thought it proved my dedication & toughness. Then I realized that 'need to prove' wasn't about confidence, it was coming from insecurity. If you want to run, great! If not, enjoy the day!

People perform best when they: -enjoy what they do -feel secure in the environment -they can make progress -Feel they belong -are doing meaningful work Nowhere in that list is excessive control, micromanaged, being motivated with fear. In other words, to lead, be a decent human

Improve your reading by: -Be intentional and focused -Set aside time just for reading -Take notes, highlight, and write in the margins -Reflect and summarize -Put books on the nightstand, not your phone.

When outcomes are all that matter, when winning or losing is self-defining, we don't become a warrior. We retreat. The secret of great performers isn't "all-in." It's going broad. Letting go. Diversifying. Win the Inside Game is in the Wall Street Journal! Read here: www.wsj.com/lifestyle/wh...

Imagine being the best in the world at something. Spending all of your time perfecting your craft. Then, in your 30s, have to walk away. Start fresh and be a 'beginner' at something completely different. Welcome to being an elite athlete. It's why retirement is often a struggle

Teach your kid how to lose well. Failure is a part of life. The earlier someone learns how to process, learn, and grow from failure, the better. If you see your child losing it, freaking out, unable to handle a tough loss, consider it as a sign they need perspective.

The quickest way to kill motivation is to be overly controlling. When we lose our sense of autonomy, our motivation plummets.

Nobel Prize winning scientists were 15 TIMES more likely to have a hobby than their colleagues who never won the prize. My conversation with @stevemagness.bsky.social was filled with GREAT stuff like this. Full convo is FREE here: chriscillizza.substack.com/p/comparison...

There’s no such thing as an elite 9 year old athlete. Nothing really matters until after puberty. Let’s stop the madness.

An excellent article on being a supportive parent of a youth sports participant. I have many stories I could add from my own kids' participation. One middle school teammate even banned her own mother from coming to the matches due to lack of self-control.

Youth sports in the US are a disaster driven by egos & money. 70% of kids drop out of sports by 13 Fear of failure & pressure to perform from parents & coaches is one of the biggest reasons We need to do better Here's my youth sports manifesto: thegrowtheq.com/how-to-save-...

The most successful people are driven by a deep curiosity and desire to learn and grow. It's not fame, money, or status. That motivation burns bright but burns out Intrinsic motivation is essential for achieving our full potential Win the Inside Game. Stop chasing the external: amzn.to/4gMNH4z

Performance is about holding onto contrasting forces. We must... -Care deeply, but let go -Try hard, but be relaxed -Set big goals, but be able to let go of the outcome -Be obsessive on the field, but able to take the jersey off. -Identify with our pursuit, but don't attach

When it gets tough, don’t fight, relax. Watch the best runners. The pressure is on, fatigue is unbearable, the temptation to tense up is there. But they don’t fight it. They relax. Fighting, trying too hard, often backfires. This applies beyond running.

My Vo2max when I ran a 4:01 mile was 67 My Vo2max when I ran 4:05 a few years later: 76 Performance is what matters. Looking at one number in isolation or chasing it is not the answer. This is why an obsession over any measure is misguided. Performance is holistic.

"Do you believe in God?" "Yes" "Have you ever seen God in person" "No" "Have you witnessed yourself run fast and perform well numerous times?" "Yes" "How can you have so much faith in something you've never seen, but no faith in something you see every day: yourself." How do you handle pressure?

Changing Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America reminds me of when you got a new president of a University and they tweak the logo ever so slightly. It's so small, no one notices....It's meaningless. But it costs the school millions to re-do all their gear, uniforms, etc.
