G'mornin' #BookSky! If gritty fantasy fiction is your thing, go give my author page a follow: www.amazon.com/author/steve... Y'won't get bombarded with stuff, but you will get a ping whenever I have a new release (one of which is imminent 👀)

Newsletter: There is no AI Revolution. Consumer adoption of generative AI outside of ChatGPT is barely 100 million people, every single company in generative AI is deeply unprofitable, Microsoft is pulling capex, and OpenAI spent $9bn in 2024 to lose $5bn. www.wheresyoured.at/wheres-the-m...

Another 10,005 words added to the WIP today (not sure why I’ve mentioned the five at the end there but who knows, they might prove to be vital!) Total wordcount of the draft is now just over 160k. “The End” of Book 2, draft 1, is in sight 👀

Right then #BookSky I’ve got a bone to pick with you all!* Why did nobody tell me how fucking good this book is?** I’m only two chapters in but it’s so deliciously dark I can already tell it’s gonna be a belter! *not really **you all told me plenty of times and I regret not acting sooner 😔

✅ Half-term completed with sanity (mostly) intact 👦👦 Kids were on top form all week (always helps) ✍🏻 Managed to get some time on the WIP (Book 2 of The Turned series, first draft) and passed a big milestone. I’ve passed the 150k words mark 💪🏻 I reckon this’ll be done in March. Lessss’gooooo!

Got a big reader in your life with a birthday coming up? Do they often have more than one book on the go at the same time? Gift idea straight out of 1588: The Bookwheel!

Sharing this little slice of sunshine because the world is bleak af right now. For anyone who doesn’t know, I have two 5yos (twin boys) and they are amazing. They’re also (unsurprisingly) a lot of work. It’s half-term this week and I’m on childcare duties until they go back to school next week.

A recent phenomenon I’ve noticed in myself. Spelling “phenomenon” is no longer an issue, but for some reason my brain now wants to spell trilogy with an extra ‘o’ in there. Triology. It’s like a “one in, one out” policy, I reckon.

This is the Isle of Discussion, an uninhabited island in the middle of Loch Leven, Scotland. If neighbours had a dispute, they’d be isolated on this isle until they could reach an agreement. I love this kind of shit.

The Devils is out in less than three months now. Just saying.

The kids are off for half-term, so now I’m struggling to keep real characters in line, rather than fictional ones. Wish me luck!

Just read some illustration advice that recommended the following and it’s genuinely gold: “If you need reference poses for wizards/mages, use photos of musical conductors”

Roses are books Books are blue Books books books books Go buy some books

And my microscopic sale has begun! Get my debut novel, Callus & Crow plus 2 dark fantasy shorts stories for free from now until Sunday night! mybook.to/CallusandCrow

Figuring out the distances between places and (vaguely) accurate travel times in a fantasy world is so mind-numbingly exhausting. Lots of variables, lots of details to consider (but not actually put into the book otherwise it’ll be boring as shit) all just so the damn thing makes sense!

Word of the day is ‘arsle’ (19th century): to have a distinct sense of going backwards.

Session finished! Clocked off at 11,164 words added for the day! Grand total hovering just over 139k (with maybe ten or so chapters left to draft)! #AmWriting #ButNotRightNowAsAmCookingDinnerForMyChildren

I'm back on the writing train today after a few days of dealing with other stuff. 2k words down and another six hours available. Total wordcount of the WIP just passed 130k and the series is really starting to take shape 💪 Lessssss'go! #AmWriting

On dreich days like these it might cheer you up to know that in 19th-century slang an umbrella was a ‘bumbershoot’.

Rewatching this gem on a Friday night. I only have a passing knowledge of the source material, but this is a well-written story and a proper fun movie.

I know it’s a bit marmite (love it or hate it, for anyone who doesn’t know wtf marmite is), but I always recommend Stephen King’s “On Writing” book to anyone thinking of giving writing a go. I don’t take everything in there as gospel, but a lot of things have helped me on my way for sure.

Accountability post: I’m up to 123k words on the WIP. Still loving it, but it feels like a bit more of a slog now. Also I think I’ve massively underestimated how long this draft will end up being, so editing is gonna be brutal 😬 (either that or I’m publishing a chonky 📖)

Good morning #BookSky. Today ends in the letter ‘y’ This is surely a sign you should go buy a book, read a book, write a book or any such combination of all three. Repeat ad infinitum.

In the aftermath of a bloody war and against his better instincts, Sweet leads his crew of veteran bounty hunters on their most dangerous job yet… (Haven’t plugged my 2023 debut in a while, so if y’like gritty fantasy check it out…) [scroll ⬇️ on the links] linktr.ee/stevepannett

Every time I say “hello!” in an upbeat tone I have to really fight the urge to add “it’s me, the head” and wobble my neck accordingly. It’s not ideal for public speaking engagements. (I feel like this is both a very odd habit and a niche reference, so this [horrifying] visual might not mean a lot)

Every time I write a character in a position of power doing something insane or unhinged I always think “nah that’s too outlandishly insane, no one will buy it.” But then I remember all of human history and crack the fuck on.

Uhhh, hi! It's me, Bookshop.org, a place to buy books online where every purchase financially supports indie bookstores instead of some billionaire.

Reminder that a (then relatively unknown) Elijah Wood hired a dialect coach, rented a cheap costume and had a friend film him reading from the LOTR up in a tree, all so he could audition for the part of Frodo. Write the thing. Do the thing. Take the risk. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Reminder from a designer (15+ years’ experience) and author. Your book cover should demand attention. (This line is from The Look of the Book, a great resource on book cover design)

🗡️📙 Coming in April, THE SINS OF STEEL AND SHADOW (Book 1 of The Turned series) 📙🗡️ linktr.ee/stevepannett ⚔️ Low fantasy 👥 Character-driven ⚠️ High-stakes (Back cover text copied in the thread below, for anyone who might struggle with the image!)

Me, in an epic baritone and an unnecessarily wide stance, arms raised to the heavens, every sinew straining: THE WINDS OF CHANGE ARE BLOWING A HURRICANE! Wife, sighing: No it’s just the wind
