In the context of a negotiation you sometimes need to blow things up in ways even your closest will think is crazy. You need people to believe your position is far from theirs and they need to move. Who did that yesterday most effectively is the puzzle.

What we've all failed to anticipate is the vice president's willingness to gas light and provoke the president. He seems to have got that the old man is not what he was and he can easily play him. Will be interesting to see where that gets him.
