Chase log for Sunday, March 30: stormhighway.com/blog2025/mar...

#weatherpicofday Stovepipe-shaped tornado illuminated by lightning south of McLean, Texas, during a significant outbreak OTD 18 years ago, March 28, 2007. The supercell cycled several minutes later, producing a twin near McLean. #TXwx with Tom Santillo

Far-overperforming storms in the St. Louis metro early this morning resulted in a productive chase of high-speed shooting at 6,002 FPS. A total of 13 save-worthy events (from memory buffer to SD card)! Video to come at some point in the future. A few stills here: stormhighway.com/blog2025/mar...

. @pmarshwx.com is an SPC employee, so he's a legitimate source of information.

Captured two examples of what appears to be bidirectional lightning leader initiation *just* above the visible cloud base this morning at New Baden, Illinois. Negative leaders emerge from cloud base only 3 frames after flash initiation at 6,002 FPS. @ztresearch.bsky.social

Just a touch of aurora from Wupatki National Monument, AZ, tonight. I got up there nick of time to snag one test shot with it. Then spent just a few minutes repositioning a few miles east right after, but the distant structure show was done by then. #northernlights #auroraphotography

If the SPC stuff on X has made it here: no, it wasn’t supposed to be shared publicly. No, it’s not in its final form or ready. Probably at least 1-2 years before it would even be. It’s already spreading like fire on X, please do not propagate the info here. Very frustrating.

There wasn't much to see as rain-wrapped tornadoes lurked in the darkness across central Illinois on Friday, March 14th, but that's no excuse not to crank out the first storm observation VLOG of the 2025 season. www.skydrama.net/post/chasing...

Chase log for today from Charleston, IL to Terre Haute, IN: stormhighway.com/blog2025/mar...

When a dust storm and rainstorm mix #ILwx #WXsky

The dust plume over the Midwest today is *very* thick. This is what the sky looks like in the St. Louis metro now (9:15am). Thicker than a solid cirrostratus deck. Don't think any model is accounting for this, likely will impact CAPE today.

Heads up to chasers with monetized social/Youtube channels. When you allow another page or channel, particularly a large one, to repost your video, you will kill the reach of your original. Lost revenue on your original can be *many* times more than any fee you were paid.

So-far surveyed and rated tornado paths March 14-15 from the Damage Assessment Toolkit. apps.dat.noaa.gov/stormdamage/...

Chasers & spotters, including those with TV stations, all are a part of reporting severe weather. No one should be given special privileges nor be demoted to the label of "amateur", especially when the latter group sends far more reports. Send to your Oklahoma representative.

Spring severe weather season got underway with a bang this weekend with near 1,500 reports of severe weather from the Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast: www.skydrama.net/post/nearly-...

Completed an unofficial survey of the full path of the Mascoutah, New Baden, Trenton, IL tornado (eastern STL metro, 2 miles from my home) via ground & drone (where allowed). Appeared to peak in intensity/width north of New Baden with apparent EF-2 damage: stormhighway.com/blog2025/mar...

Finished a chase log page, with video and pictures of the tornado path from Mascoutah to near Trenton, IL on my blog: stormhighway.com/blog2025/mar...

More damage from the Mascoutah-New Baden-Trenton Illinois tornado. The most significant is to a farm/livestock facility on Luettinger Road north of New Baden: every structure was damaged/destroyed. At least EF2 damage. Path width at least 1/2 mile here. More here: stormhighway.com/blog2025/mar...

Observed two tornadoes in the St. Louis metro last night. No good visuals, mostly power flashes. Arnold/Oakville, MO and Mascoutah/New Baden, IL. The latter passed 2 miles from home. stormhighway.com/blog2025/mar...

Back to back, but distinctly different tornado risks to discuss for Friday and Saturday, March 14-15. 📺🌪️My latest U.S. Tornado Forecast video: youtu.be/oxrmuaaXuoA

Busy week ahead! Spring storm season is back.

Always adding to this list of chaser web sites with storm pictures and accounts. Some long-timers and newcomers to check out here: stormtrack.org/threads/chas...

Here’s a very quick timelapse of the turbulent asperitas clouds passing over Chicago #ILwx #ChicagoWX

Thinking tonight might be good for highly-branched upward lightning at the OKC tower farm if the drier post-frontal air can get under the electrified stratiform precip.

In response to the proliferation of AI, I recently added this photo/video authenticity statement to my site. stormhighway.com/photo-edits....

Despite this winter being one of my most grueling yet best in terms of footage captures, it was one of the worst in the value of that work being stolen by piracy/license breaches, including by a respected company in the weather community. May not be able to continue winter ops.

Annual March 1 blog post kicking off the 2025 spring storm season! stormhighway.com/blog2025/mar...

Mercury was bunched up nicely with the thin crescent moon tonight. It was bright enough I thought it was Saturn at first. But Saturn was well below the trees by the time I grabbed shots. Then Venus blazing up high. #astronomy #astrophotography

FYI to chasers who did highlight DVDs in the old days: I'm seeing a lot of signs of increased interest in that type of content. Worth dusting them off and uploading them to your Youtube. Also seeing lots of unauthorized rips of those uploaded - so be on watch.

Always nice to finally get the first (meteorological) spring chase thread started on Stormtrack: stormtrack.org/threads/2025...

Here is the severe weather outlook and technical discussion from the @NWS Storm Prediction Center @NWSSPC for next Tuesday. A severe weather outbreak is possible across parts of the South. A 30% probability is as high as it gets at this range.

BTW: Severe weather season is rapidly approaching. Graphic from NOAA.

It's been a great run of storms this week, here's a few snaps.

Reminder! A little more than 2 weeks away from the Tri-State Tornado 100th anniversary event in southern Illinois. You can still register on NWS PAH's web page: www.weather.gov/pah/Tri-Stat...

Lightning 70+ miles away in southern Illinois tonight. #ilwx stormhighway.com/blog2025/feb...
