Scientists often hold some of the greatest political clout among faculty (cancer research, anyone?) and yet they often appear to be THE most timid of our colleagues. Why? Speak now or keep forever the silence of your profession's grave

West Point apparently disolved its sociology major and canceled classes on race and gender in response to Trump and Hegseth’s threats. It’s amazing that these supposedly manly men are terrified of ideas. So cowardly. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/08/o...

Staking this claim now: should we be so fortunate as to get another Democratic trifecta, it should be judged a failure if it does not 1) jail the people responsible for this, 2) abolish or in some other way dismantle and disarm ICE

On a conference panel back in Nov. ‘23, I speculated something like this would happen, and I still remember the way people’s jaws dropped. But a good rule of thumb in the contemporary moment is to count on the most bananas outcome.

If you don’t understand that drawing a line between political and non-political is itself political, you shouldn’t comment on politics.

Our Annual Review of Sociology article on conceptualizing and measuring structural racism is now available. Get it while studying racism is still legal. @tyson-brown.bsky.social @pahoman.bsky.social (also, lots of great articles are in this volume). www.annualreviews.org/content/jour...

So is Carney gonna call in any airstrikes on the illegitimate junta ruling the restive former colonial outpost just across his country’s southern border? Surely a few well-placed smart bombs will alleviate the destabilizing threat of cross-border skirmishes and territorial encroachment.

"The four-day trip to New York City, which took place in February, was necessary to gather information on Virginia-born photographer Sally Mann’s artwork and follow up on “critical leads,” police spokesperson Chelsea Kretz said" Sure... I think there's some room here to defund the police.

This great @boltsmag.org piece on Democratic legislators in Maryland and their betrayal of the state’s immigrants is a profile in abject cowardice. boltsmag.org/maryland-287...

Just finished teaching a new undergrad "humanities research lab" course called The Black Panther Party & the Politics of Decolonization. Students are finalizing original primary-source research projects now. Here's the playlist I made to accompany the syllabus (1 song per week).

University leaders need to understand: they are holding INCREDIBLY good cards. It is so rare in today's polarized era to have the support of 70+ percent of the public against the Trump admiministration on anything. Universities have that—AND winning legal arguments.

I think self-described liberals were far more attached to re-imagining abolish ICE and defund the police as “slogans” from nowhere with no constituency, suffering from poor messaging, and not grounded political demands that they simply opposed

The fact of the matter is that the American conservative movement has backed a president now harassing students and destroying academic work on ideological grounds. This entire debate should be suspended until the conservative movement repudiates him. There is nothing to discuss until then.

This is a great article from @hakeemjefferson.bsky.social that he should not have needed to write. I long for the day when race scholars don’t have to respond to people who have no clue what they are talking about, but nonetheless feel free to pontificate. stanforddaily.com/2025/04/22/w...

Love to watch the meritocracy in action

A short article of mine on civil-military relations and democratic backsliding had been accepted for publication in the journal "Connections". Then I received an email that the editors can't publish the paper unless I "remove the case study/examples of the United States" (1/x) #CivMilSky

The message from Baltimore, where Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s detention odyssey began

So TPUSA is a terrorist gang whose members should all be arrested on conspiracy charges and whose funders should be prosecuted under material support statutes, right?

People are mobilizing around demanding that airline "Avelo drop its contract with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to fly [deportation] charters from an airport in Mesa, Ariz." Like #TeslaTakedown, this is something that could easily grow and spread. www.nhregister.com/news/article...

The “tariffs” are not even a month old and spare parts for some foreign cars are already unobtainable. Gonna be empty store shelves by autumn - the same empty store shelves they showed us every day on TV in the 80s in the “See? Communism doesn’t work!” news segments.

Legend

Approximately 287 other people's loved ones' desperate hopes just got lifted tonight: the first glimmer of possibility that maybe this won't go on forever. Few if any had due process, and they should not be in that prison. Keep up this energy: don't let up now.

On April 11, Vera received an email from DOGE staff, requesting a meeting to discuss “having a DOGE team assigned to the organization.” Via @washingtonpost.com: www.washingtonpost.com/national-sec...

What a phrase: Harvard is “about to learn the price of crossing the president.” If free speech exists, there should be zero “cost” to “crossing the president.” This is to treat Trump as a mob boss, rather than the president of the United States.

It's not just Trump learning from Bukele. Salvadorans and their history of struggle should reveal to US leftists the outlines of the broad antifascist front that will always be the best antidote to the reactionary right, writes @robvato.bsky.social.

"The US immigration system runs not on the enforcement of immigration laws but on their selective nonenforcement. Employers have relied on the state to ignore the exploitation of undocumented labor while holding the credible threat of deportation over workers" www.phenomenalworld.org/analysis/wag...

Everyone needs to stop treating pretextual justifications for the attack on higher education seriously.

NEW: The Trump administration wants federal supervision of Columbia University—a consent decree—which could last for years and subject the university to contempt penalties if it doesn't conform to Trump admin demands. www.wsj.com/us-news/educ...

I thought conservatives were against tyranny. Don't tread on me my ass.

This is as good and indication as any of the enthusiastic, gleeful, murderous support of the Biden administration for Israel’s eventual genocide in Gaza. Could’ve cut off at the knees at any moment and instead offered every encouragement, blocking all accountability, and less weapons, etc.
