Fabulous @studyofparl.bsky.social conference just finished, covering devolution, law-drafting -making & -scrutinising, lords reform, and reflections by MPs, their staff and SpAds on political work. I was appointed as Chair of the SPG (even tho my group came last in the quiz). An honour.

As our annual weekend draws to a close. We just wanted to say thank you to all our panellists, and chairs for their time over the last two days; to all of you who attended (virtually or in person); and also to our organisers. We hope you enjoyed the weekend & safe travels!

Our second panel of the day focused on the first impressions that newly elected MPs have of Westminster. We were pleased to welcome @leighinghammp.bsky.social (MP for Stafford) and her researcher Rosanna to share their perspectives.

Great first day. An interesting range of panels. Who’d have thought the National Audit Office could be so entertaining?

Our final session of the day was the Wheeler Booth Memorial Lecture, delivered by Dame Elizabeth Gardiner DCB, former First Parliamentary Counsel (2015-2024). As a legislative drafter Elizabeth spent over 20 years working on a wide range of bills.

Our third panel of the day is on Parliament and the National Audit Office, reflecting on 40 years of the National Audit Act 1983. Panellists: Prof David Heald (Uni of Glasgow) Dr Henry Midgley (Uni of Durham) Aileen Murphie (formerly of the NAO)

Today the PM has announced 38 new peers, to add to a chamber of over 800 Constitution Unit Director & House of Lords expert Meg Russell describes it as 'very disappointing' to do this without agreeing a size cap for the chamber. Most people want the Lords to be no bigger than the House of Commons.

Had thoroughly enjoyable and educative two days listening to @studyofparl.bsky.social Commons and Lords officials as well as academics, think tankers and former and current parliamentarians.

It has been ~a week~ filled with book proofs and norovirus and cancelled plans and then cancelled trains but I finally made it to day 2 of the @studyofparl.bsky.social conference and it was a delight! Huge thanks to the organisers! Plus I got to walk through my fave park and say hi to the pelicans 😍

This was great fun: debating the relationship between Parliament and the Executive with former Brexit Secretary David Davis, former Chief Whip Ann Taylor, and Director of the @hansardsociety.bsky.social, @ruthfox.bsky.social. Part of the 60th anniversary conference of the @studyofparl.bsky.social.
