Even now, I hold to the notion that to be Canadian is to be peaceful, compassionate, and believe good governance is possible.

Blocking new development doesn’t “preserve” your town—it drains your wallet. No new homes = no new taxpayers… but guess what does grow? School budgets, potholes, annual maintenance costs and legacy pension requirements. Fewer people to split that bill = higher taxes for you.

"Let’s invest in better transit, encourage walk-on travel... The result would be better use of public funds, a more resilient transportation system, and a step toward a more sustainable future for our coast." Lawrence Lambert www.timescolonist.com/opinion/comm... #VancouverIsland #yyj #bcpoli

"It’s time to improve non-auto travel to ensure that everybody, including non-drivers, can be safe and independent... many seniors would like to bicycle, including e-bikes and adult three-wheelers... We need better bikeways" Todd Litman www.timescolonist.com/opinion/comm... #yyj #yyjbike

Shovels are in the ground for Hwy1 bus lanes, but has the U-turn happened, or will the next big funding announcement be for a highway expansion boondoggle? (Highway expansion makes traffic worse and increases carbon pollution). See www.gvat.ca/blog/wins-95... #yyj #bcpoli @gvat.bsky.social

Hauling 2000 kg SUVs between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay makes no sense. I suspect many weekend ferry users are going "up island", but the writer makes a great point about our unsustainable ferry system. #yyj www.timescolonist.com/opinion/comm...

Saanich is developing a Traffic Calming Policy to improve road safety, reduce speeding, and support active transportation. Your input matters! Take the Survey by May 31, 2025. hello.saanich.ca/ Let’s work together for calmer, safer, and more livable streets for everyone. @saanichbc.bsky.social

2/3 of people thought they had above average support for policies that support travel washout a car. Don't think the comments represent a majority! #carsruincities

New! We received a lot of requests to release our bonus with Marco te Brömmelstroet, aka “The Fietsprofessor," about a study he co-authored with @ianwalker.bsky.social on where motornomativity comes from... so here it is! Plus, better language for better streets. thewaroncars.org/2025/05/06/e...

Oh boy 😎

The great @georgemonbiot.bsky.social in a outstanding interview. I always get so happy when he talks about nature. But when he starts to analyse, its where the magic happens. open.spotify.com/episode/61nV...

City councils listen to everyone's perspectives. And *many* give us their perspectives. It can feel hard emotionally when a decision doesn't go the way a person wanted. It doesn't mean the opinion was ignored. Just that we also listen to others' opinions. My letter in the Times Colonist:

Andrew Nikiforuk: To appreciate our new world disorder with its daily menu of betrayals, threats and tariffs, we require an honest vocabulary. So let’s call a spade a spade and name the words we need. Words like “revolution.” “Führer democracy.” “Mafia state.” “Orbánization.”

BREAKING & BIG: Today in PARIS, citizens voted in a referendum to PEDESTRIANIZE 500 MORE of the city's streets, giving fresh momentum to efforts by city leaders to create people-places, curb car usage, and improve air quality. 66% of Parisians voted in favour of the measure, official results showed!

If direct air capture (DAC), a CO₂ removal (CDR) technique, costs $500 per tonne, removing just US emissions would cost ~$3 trillion annually (that's ~4x US military spending). It would also require twice the total power generation capacity of the US today (and it has to be 100% carbon-free).

What a psycho

I have just asked the Governor General to dissolve Parliament and call a federal election on April 28. We need to build the strongest economy in the G7. We need to deal with President Trump’s tariffs. Canadians deserve a choice about who should lead that effort for our country.

Nobody wants BlueSky to become just like Xhitter. I block trolls instantly, no warnings. Blocked one just now. Felt good.👍

In the plans I’m working on, I call it “corner convenience.” Allow stores, services, restaurants/cafes within a workable form/scale at EVERY corner in the city/suburb. DON’T require parking, and allow housing above. It’s a no-brainer for more walkable, complete neighbourhoods with less car traffic.

@bluejays.com Hello?

Be wary about any politicians who repeat Russian-Trump talking points. #cdnpoli

IMPORTANT: The Dutch invested €595 million annually on urban biking, resulting in €19 BILLION saved in public health care costs alone. That’s how smart govts do math on investing in better mobility. Let’s be clear — it wastes public money to NOT do it. #CityMakingMath HT @modacitylife.com

At its heart, this is what made me go full on in safe streets advocacy- realizing that it is the source of this country’s ability for the powerful to abuse the less powerful with impunity. Safe streets, good equitable infrastructure is the foundation of a better society.

Drivers typically crash into pedestrians who are similar to them in ethnicity and income -- with one big exception: Wealthy drivers often hit low-income pedestrians. doi.org/10.1016/j.tr...

Check out the bold @canadiangreens.bsky.social statement on defending Canada from the rising fascist threat. Serious threats require serious responses, and Trump, Putin etc threaten everything Canadians value. www.greenparty.ca/en/petitions... #cdnpoli @elizabethemay.bsky.social #yyj

The thing about womanhood is we’re suppose to take us as little space as possible, be caregivers to everyone but ourselves, be comfortable being uncomfortable, and smile as a second class citizen. Biking is one of my ways of just saying NO to that insane paradigm and YES to everyday playful joy.

Well done.

“Toronto’s bike-lane expansion program is going full steam ahead despite the Doug Ford provincial government’s legislation limiting the city’s powers. According to a new proposal, city staff are recommending a $28.5-million project to build over 12 kilometres of new bike lanes.” Good. Keep going.
