Have reached the stage of depression where I am not fulfilling important obligations to friends

This is the worst it has been personally, medically, professionally, socially, and politically my whole life. I am sixty years old.

My newsletter this week is for everyone who misses the quieter corners of the internet. I’ll be over there talking about what I’ve learned in tech, if that’s your thing. (And yes, still moving to Ghost, pls bear with me.) open.substack.com/pub/leahreic...

Is there a word for being shocked but not surprised?

My long-dead dvd player has a sticker on it that says “Skype certified.” I have no memory of this and no idea of what that could have meant.

Today’s buried headline: Killer jellyfish in Scotland wipe out over 200,000 salmon

It would be nice to have a public space here without evangelical jargon floating around.

I worked for the LA Reader around the time Blue Velvet came out. We ran the Angriest Dog cartoon. He’d call up and dictate the cartoon to our designer, who lettered it. Fond memory of that time.

So my fridge died and I lost some food, around $100 worth. It got replaced, after 3 wks of nagging my landlord, and it was running enough to rack up a $160 electric bill. Thus, I'm begging for that $260. venmo: @wanderingerica cashapp: $palkyrie Thx for your kindness/reblogs/seeing this! ❤️

Judging by branded apparel, I’m the only guy in the county who isn’t an MMA fighter

That unique sound of someone loudly and cheerfully misinforming. Ow!!

“I don’t understand what produce in the Central Valley has to do with fires in LA” this is the subject of one of the most famous movies ever made, in which it is explained to Jack Nicholson at length by the director of The Maltese Falcon

The only reason I get up in the morning is that’s the only way I’ll get to sleep again at night.

I rarely reference stuff I studied in grad school, unless I really like it, so: This would be a good time for someone to trot out the ol' normalization of deviance framework and put it to work. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normali...

Some evil bastards bought the property next to the nature center and chopped down a stand of 50 year old trees that sheltered the place. I hate Orange County.

Blocking an annoying account is like taking a rock out of my shoe.

Piece of ash from right outside my back door in Glassell Park. Only clear words are “platonists” and “Swedenborg”

It was midnight in Topanga I heard the DJ say There's a full moon rising Join me in L.A Join me in L.A

This wind straight up lifted a sturdy metal chair off the ground outside. Impressive.

Today is the birthday of cartoonist Charles Addams (Jan. 7, 1912-Sept. 29, 1988), the creator of the one-panel comic strip that came to be known as The Addams Family, which first appeared in The New Yorker.

when in doubt, there's always the LYNDA CARTER'S ENCORE! special from 1980, where she performs "I Was Made for Loving You" with a bunch of dancers dressed up as Kiss *and* does a Bette Midler tribute wearing a banana-festooned dress, while accompanied by a chorus line of King Kongs in tops and tails

"Eliza has hitherto been unavilable to small computer users except in greatly stripped down versions lacking the sophistication which made the original program so fascinating..." (Source.)
