The Senate must reject the nomination of Emil Bove to the US Court of Appeals. Whistleblower allegations that DOJ official Bove suggested defying court orders point to a brazen attack on the rule of law by someone who should not sit on the federal bench. americanoversight.org/american-ove...

New from me and the great @hana-kiros.bsky.social reporting on the devastation caused by the USAID cuts Musk championed, Musk’s troubling obsession with “western civilization” and which lives he believes are worth saving (it’s not kids in South Sudan)

Veteran photographer Michael Nigro was shot in the head with a non-lethal bullet while covering anti-ICE protests in LA. "It felt very very intentional," Nigro tells NPR, "a chilling effect to convince us to go away." Other reporters say they have been targeted too. My story below:

How to stop authoritarian takeovers, 6 simple lessons from history: 1. Build a broad pro-democracy coalition. No purity politics. Learn to work with people who annoy you. You can go back to dunking on them after democracy is safe.

This is what fascists do when their lies stop working.

Hegesth is a case of a man clearly unqualified for the job, but got picked through his blind loyalty to another unqualified man and by questioning the merit of people who actually knew what they were doing.

While we're talking about Whiskey Pete Hegseth...He had three days of hearings this week, each day worse than the day before. The full HASC Republicans got bored, so it was almost as if Dems had the majority, bc they sure as FUCK weren't bored flogging Whiskey Pete. There were so many highlights--

Sen. Bill Cassidy is a physician. He knows people will die because of RFK Jr.’s anti-vax policies. Yet he voted to confirm Kennedy as Health secretary because he cares more about getting re-elected than saving lives. Cassidy is Dr. Death – a symbol of Republicans’ betrayal of the American people.

The New Yorker's Emily Nussbaum has a wonderful story about the woman who created the TV sitcom form, Gertrude Berg, and how the Blacklist and Communist scare of the 1950s canceled her fame and erased her legacy. A story which resonates today. READ: loom.ly/Rr5FDdg

Brad Bondi, Pam Bondi's little brother, just lost his race for president of the D.C. bar association by more than 31,000 votes, with 43% turnout. Among the reasons this is funny: In the last 3 D.C. bar association president elections, turnout has been 6-8%, and *maxed out* at about 7,000 votes

Speaker of the House: Using active duty Marines on the streets of an American city is just “peace through strength.” ‼️ So we can’t count on the Speaker to defend the rule of law, or to defend the military against misuse.

Great to see DOJ alumni banding together to provide pro bono legal services to DOJ employees. Bravo to Justice Connection for supporting the nonpartisan workforce.

@sarahlongwell25.bsky.social on the 'One Big Beautiful Bill': "The right-wing messaging machine...has decided to just lie about what the bill does — which is sort of par for the course. Donald Trump lied about how he was going to lower grocery prices. They just lie about things."

As a longtime Palantir shareholder, I thought Alex Karp was different. I was wrong. The motherfucker is no different than any other corporate whore. Karp is selling out the American people to help a fascist authoritarian regime monitor citizens. This is Orwellian bullshit.

Trump says we're overrun by "illegals." He's manifested those fever dreams into reality through a “de-documentation” campaign, stripping legal immigrants of their visas & work permits. He's not targeting criminals; he's criminalizing immigrants who follow the law. wapo.st/3HvBBka

Rupert Murdoch did this. American democracy is hanging by a thread because of Fox’s lies about our elections and its promotion of bigotry. People are dying because of anti-vax fears supercharged by Fox’s conspiracy theories. Rupert Murdoch did this. He is one of the monsters of our age.

Some folks just thought it was trite when people warned if they come for the most marginalized, sooner or later they are coming for you.

I wrote years ago that when Republican lawmakers sucked up to Trump, they told themselves if he ever got really bad, they’d stop him. I said at the time that they were fooling themselves. I was right, of course. Now they’re all in. They’re henchmen in the plot to destroy our democracy.

I wish journalists would stop framing political news as wins or losses for politicians or political parties. It’s an abrogation of our mission. Why do we keep doing this? Is the spending bill a win or loss for the American people? Who does it help? Who does it hurt? Is it sound policy? Fiscally?
