When all seems lost and everything is despair (see: everything), you gotta do *something*. Even if it doesn't help the immediate problem, it'll help. Watch a movie Bake a cake Check in on a friend Take a walk Pet a dog Babysit Surprise a neighbor with flowers or whatever you can/like to do

Magic isn't real?? Well ok then explain this: #AGDQ2025

I put together a list of some of my favorite short fiction of 2024. If you're thinking about awards and catching up on reading, I have suggestions for you! acwise.net/favorite-sho...

Always.

At the edge of the world, on the island of R'evava in the Arctic Ocean, a blizzard rages outside as five people gathered in a weather station tell stories while they wait for a break in the storm... "Songs of the Snow Whale" by K.A. Teryna is out now! reactormag.com/songs-of-the...

Periodic #introduction! I'm Addison Smith, and I write SF/F/H. Lots of flash, some shorts, trying for novels. My stuff is weird and often about fish. Some of my favorite stories! flashpointsf.com/2024/06/14/f... www.fantasy-magazine.com/fm/fiction/s... escapepod.org/2024/10/31/e...

In the US, please check out bookshop.org, which partners with local/indie bookstores. You can specify a store to support, otherwise the profit goes into a general pool distributed among participating booksellers. They're also here on Bluesky at @bookshop-org.bsky.social.

Always Read Kristina Ten (Whose story “Aporoved Methods of Love Divination …” in Fantasy & SF magazine in July/Aug 2023 made me cackle and scream in the best way)

What a fantastic initiative! 🌈✨ I'm excited to see so many diverse voices in SFF! For October 2024, check out "The Stars Are Still Ours" by Jamie Lee! #QueerSFF #IndieAuthors

I've taught college for 15+ years and I'm as convinced as ever that the absolute best thing you can do for your kid's life is raise them to enjoy reading. Over and over and over, you see it: So many other complex skills are downstream of being able to focus on (even enjoy) a written text.

Everyone should get a library card if you don't already have one! It's more important than ever to support public libraries. This is an extension that tells you if the book you are looking up on Amazon or Goodreads is in your library (and if it is available).

😭😭😭 This flash is so packed with emotion. A metaphor for what we judge as worthy of saving and what we think should be let go. But every small thing counts and everything adds up. In the end we might end up much lonelier than we thought. by Will McMahon in @lightspeedmagazine.com

“We read these stories with the hope that some other destination beyond our present, dark trajectory is possible.” Yume Kitasei, author of The Stardust Grail, offers insight into what cozy sci-fi can bring us: reactormag.com/why-compassi...

Remember, if you like a book, the single best thing you can do to make sure that there's eventually another book by that author to like is to tell a friend. Or an enemy!

I've made two starter packs with speculative fiction publications - magazines and podcasts - on Bluesky. I hope they make it easier for people to find & follow a whole bunch of great spec-fic venues. I'll keep adding as I go. Starter pack 1: go.bsky.app/4FbEmZU Starter pack 2: go.bsky.app/ASWSvfZ

I know it's likely that no one will read this post but I'm so tired of waking up between 2 & 4 in the morning in pain. I'm so tired of having fibromyalgia, of not being able to work, of not being able to keep up with my kid that it just feels so awful. I feel like screaming.

So, this is happening: reactormag.com/tor-publishi...

The Sunday Morning Transport dashes through the streets today with a delightful story by Paolo Bacigalupi (@paolobacigalupi.bsky.social) about the optimism an artist needs. The final story in our free story month - please consider subscribing!

VP Harris isn't "childless." She's been a stepmom for 10 years. That "counts." Can we not buy into the Right's narrative that parenting only happens with one's own uterus, by State coercion if needed? Sing it with me: families look like lots of things, and love makes a family.

🌚 What the heck is "#DarkOxygen" everyone keeps talking about? In the total darkness of the depths of the Pacific Ocean, scientists have discovered oxygen being produced not by living organisms but by strange potato-shaped metallic lumps that give off almost as much electricity as AA batteries.
