“Cannot log in to the game server because it has been temporarily disabled or is undergoing maintenance”
Guess that means it’s time to catch up on Vaatividya’s hands-on and feed the kiddo before work.

The menu music sounds really nice through the headphones I put on to not make any extra noise

Valve’s is fine but pricey compared to Jsaux options (just pick the one with the port selection you like the most). Jsaux also has one with an M.2 SSD slot, and Razer just launched a new one with RGB (lol) but it’s got a nice tilting stand and works with Switch too.

Yeah but it’s probably only worth it if you’re an Oikos Plus subscriber

Much of that credit goes to @bluesguy.bsky.social who also prompted us with the questions and acted as our host. (Sorry for forgetting to tag Andru)

Full disclosure: this would have been pretty much the same conversation @seanhollister.bsky.social, @vicmsong.bsky.social, @allisonjo1.bsky.social, @welch.bsky.social, @jp2e.bsky.social, and I would have had if the cameras and mics were never turned on

Be sure to check out our Best of CES video where, each of us take turns talking through our favorite thing we saw at the show

I simply COULD NOT have asked for a better first CES. I credit much of it to the talent, support, and guidance of my amazing colleagues. They helped me with advice, insight, and calming my nerves. It was also an honor to return the favor with photo coverage or whatever else I could offer in return

And to cap off my CES coverage I made a short list of the laptops I’m most excited to test when they launch this year. I’m super stoked to review these when the time comes.

I also had a fun hands-on with a ridiculous (yet charming) Asus laptop that dispenses essential oil fragrances as it runs warmer. Don’t knock it till you’ve smelled it — though it’s only available in China

But I had another fun hands-on, getting a hold of Acer’s big boy handheld, the Nitro Blaze 11, and taking pics of it side-by-side with a Steam Deck OLED. It’s a beast, but it looks cool for someone that wants the biggest PC handheld for around-the-house use

Then, of course, the great @seanhollister.bsky.social made it happen and got some hands-on game time with one from Nvidia

Speaking of hunting things down, we were also in search of a Nvidia RTX 5090 GPU that we could actually play… and at first the best we could do is track down some partner cards that I could hold (like this one from MSI).

But in the middle of CES we heard murmurs of a Nintendo Switch 2 mockup making some low-key appearances. Thanks to the help of my colleagues I was able to hunt it down and get the clearest and sharpest photos of it yet.

Then there’s what ended up being my highlight of the show, Lenovo’s ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 laptop with a rollable display. $3,500 is a lot for a productivity / business laptop, but having a screen that GROWS from 14” to 16.7” is just so slick

Also from Asus, its new Zenbook A14 is insanely light (a colleague and I were each able to lift it with just three fingers). I’m just a little concerned about its lower-powered Snapdragon X… 😬

(Mental note: Don’t start this thread right before leaving to go to a hockey game. But on the plus side, the NY Sirens won in spectacular fashion in OT!)

It’s looking promising as long as graphics power is your priority over battery life. Which tracks with the Strix Point models.

Another early preview I got was for Asus’s new ROG Flow Z13 gaming tablet, which I got to test out for a couple days on a preproduction model. The Flow remains very niche but is showing some promise with the new Strix Halo APU.

I also got an early look at this nifty mouse from HyperX, which will have readily available 3D printable files to make your own shells

Before the show I got to see and photograph MSI’s new Titan gaming laptop in its outlandish Dragon Edition incarnation. They didn’t give a price but the regular Titan costs $5,000+ 😭

I should also add that I have some Personal News to go with this review. As of last week I’m officially The Verge’s Laptop Reviewer. Stoked to be making this my main beat. I know there are big shoes to fill from the folks who did it before, and I’m excited to grow into the role and make it my own. 🤓
