This week's #bookreview: Jean-Christophe Grangé's Les Rivières pourpres, an atmospheric #CrimeFiction set in a university for the highly gifted. The plot is delightfully convoluted. Translated into English as The Crimson Rivers by Ian Monk. #fiction talking-about-books.com/2025/03/01/l...

The #InternationalBooker2025 longlist is here! 13 books in 10 languages ( #Kannada for the first time), writers of 10 nationalities ( #Romania for the first time) and 12 books published by independent publishers! @thebookerprizes.bsky.social #booksintranslation thebookerprizes.com/the-booker-l...

From the archives for #BlackHistoryMonth: Percival Everett's The Trees, a powerful and funny (I was laughing and wincing at the same time) novel about racism and violence in the US. It's the kind of book that stays with you. talking-about-books.com/2023/07/08/t...

This week's #bookreview: Jane Hamilton's A Map of the World. Alice is grieving the death of a child, when an accusation of sexual harassment leads to her imprisonment. A portrait of a marriage. #fiction @doubledaybooks.bsky.social talking-about-books.com/2025/02/22/a...

Posting a poem that influenced me. Will try and find 20. Day 1 #BookSky #PoetrySky #Poem @andreapa.bsky.social www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/46560/...

My new #bookreview for Women on the Road is the #autobiography of Fawzia Koofi, an Afghan woman MP and ex-Deputy Speaker of the Afghan parliament. It is a portrait of a brave woman and also of #Afghanistan, and an inspirational story, especially now. www.women-on-the-road.com/travel-book-...

This week's #bookreview: Anna Burns's Milkman. During #NorthernIreland Troubles, a young woman fends off the attentions of a paramilitary man and the resulting rumours. An atmospheric cautionary tale that feels relevant today. #fiction @faberbooks.bsky.social talking-about-books.com/2025/02/15/m...

This week's #bookreview: Lindsey Davis's Enemies at Home, the 2nd in the Flavia Albia series, #crimefiction set in #AncientRome with a female investigator. A couple is murdered and their slaves are accused. But it is much less straightforward than it seems. talking-about-books.com/2025/02/08/e...

Hightlighting some Black American writers for #BlackHistoryMonth in the US. Starting off with Viola Davis's #memoirs, Finding Me, a searing, moving and ultimately redemptive memoir from the Black actress. #bookreview talking-about-books.com/2024/11/02/f...

Calling overseas has become complicated. I would pick up my landline phone and call my family in India. But landlines often don't work any more. Patchy internet means that calls are clear for a minute or two and then break up. So I call again and again until the conversation is done. Technology, eh?

This week's #bookreview: The Book of Fire by Christy Lefteri, a harrowing, beautifully written novel about the effect of a #wildfire on a family and a Greek village. Lefteri makes the fire and its aftermath feel so real. #fiction talking-about-books.com/2025/02/01/t...

Some more pics from #Amsterdam. This is Amsterdam's Oersoep Gallery (which translates as Amsterdam Primordial Soup). Full of lovely #mosaics, it is a tribute to Amsterdam's canals and representations of everything that defines Amsterdam’s unique character.

Jesus was here

I was in Amsterdam earlier this month. The highlight was Rembrandt's Night Watch in the Rijkmuseum, which is being restored. The varnish is nearly off and the painting looks even more stunning than before. You can see the difference by looking at the right-hand side of the painting. #art

My 1st #bookreview of 2025 for Women on the Road is Amy Field's Sola: One Woman’s Journey Alone Across South America. Field spent 2 1/2 years in Latin America, and not only learned Spanish but also the joys of travelling alone. www.women-on-the-road.com/travel-book-... #travelbooks #latinamerica

I always look forward to Michael Kerr's preview of the travel books of the year, and 2025's list is no exception. So many good travel books to add to my list, including the latest by my pal @shafikmeghji.bsky.social. deskboundtraveller.com/words-from-t...

Bapsi Sidhwa died. A wonderful writer—her book, The Ice-Candy Man (renamed Cracking India for the US market and made into a film as Earth by Deepa Mehta) is an unforgettable story about Partition, seen in the microcosm of a group of people in Lahore. She will be missed. scroll.in/article/1077...

Happy holidays and all the best for a happy and peaceful 2025. God knows we need it. The photo is of a gulmohar from a tree that used to grow by my mother's house, so it's special. Took it from her rooftop.
