"The construction and perpetuation of a state, whether it is a nation state or a multinational state, is a matter of will. Canada has proved that by its political survival for 350 years." John W. Holmes, The Better Part of Valour (1970), 138.

It is a special kind of cringe to read commentary that invokes historical patterns but then gets the basic history wrong.

“Look at the sheer girth of this thing” (actual quote)

I appreciate the strong interest in the Canadian election but not a lot of patience for the armchair punditry from people who learned the word riding last week.

Congratulations to Charles Tupper who continues to reign as the shortest-serving Canadian PM.

No matter whether the Liberals pull off the majority or are held to a minority, this election will be one we talk about for a long while à la 1891 or 1911.

If both the Liberals and Conservatives pass 40%, it’ll be the first time since the 1930 election between R.B. Bennett and Mackenzie King.

Personal highlights of the CBC election night coverage: a thread.

“It makes no sense unless Canada is a State!” Well … happy Election Day, Canada! Go vote if you haven’t already.

Did you know you can download or print the PDF of any TNSR article or issue for free?! That includes our latest issue, linked here, which we encourage you to share and use in your curricula at will. tnsr.org/latest-print...

Of all the things I do at the Program in American Grand Strategy, this is the one that makes me most proud. The chance to be in the places we’ve read about and step into the perspectives of others shapes the way we think about major historical episodes, fostering empathy and encouraging reflection.

Turns out the Americans weren't the only ones flirting with buying Greenland in the 1940s. At least one Canadian official hoped to beat them to the punch! 🗃️ "Ambassador in Argentina to Under-Secretary of State for External Affairs," November 13, 1947, DCER 1947, doc. 239.

In @tnsr.org, @jjjcameron.bsky.social has a great article out on START I and the two superpowers' competing definitions of strategic stability, highlighting how the United States redefined the term in significant ways over the course of the 1980s.

The concentration required to write anything longer than an email is in extremely short supply these days.

This feels rather on the nose today for remarks delivered in 1951. 🗃️ Louis St. Laurent, Northwestern University, June 11, 1951, gac.canadiana.ca/view/ooe.sas...

After hoarding documents about LIVE OAK and Berlin contingency planning over the years, it was such a pleasure to be part of this CIENS workshop dedicated to the subject. Leaving with lots of ideas and inspiration to finally write something with all these archival materials I’ve squirreled away.

Happy(?) 76th, NATO.

Hello, old friend.

Great round-up of perspectives on the prospects for an independent and extended European nuclear deterrent.

“Rutte told reporters ahead of a meeting of alliance foreign ministers that ‘there are no plans for them to all of a sudden draw down their presence here in Europe. But we know that for America being the superpower they are, they have to attend to more theatres’.” That’s not really reassuring.

Me: I need to make progress on this book project I've been working on for ages. Also me: (reads a few interesting things in passing and concludes this entirely different topic would be a great subject for a whole other book) I should go down that rabbit hole for a while.

"'That was a clear signal that something fundamentally has changed in the United States,' says Markus Ziener. 'We don't know where the US is heading but we know the belief that we can 100% rely on American protection when it comes to our security - that trust has now gone.'"

Excellent piece from @jjjcameron.bsky.social about the options ahead for Europe:
