Thinking of my former Journal Star colleague Dave who was kind to all even in tough situations. May he rest in peace.

Can you name the 5 protections under the #FirstAmendment? 💡 Take our short quiz, which also asks questions about when the freedoms do or don't apply: bit.ly/1AQuiz

Charles M. “Sparky” Schulz, creator of Snoopy and the Peanuts Gang, passed away 25 years ago today—just hours before his final Peanuts Sunday comic strip ran in newspapers around the world. 💛 In memory of Charles Monroe Schulz November 26, 1922–February 12, 2000

Great to hear my husband @benjaminlclark.com on NPR Morning Edition today!🎉 Give it a listen: www.npr.org/2025/02/12/n...

This is true in my experience.

Oh nooo, I hope this doesn't happen! I always appreciated that the PD is locally owned, especially considering the fate of one too many newsrooms when out-of-state companies/hedge funds take over. sfstandard.com/2025/02/06/s...

Bought a Sunday print edition of the @houstonchronicle.com while in Houston for a layover. Can’t resist a good Sunday paper when I see one! This was $5 and it’s a nice big bundle. My kiddo was thrilled there’s a comics section! 🗞️ #supportlocalnews

Appreciate this @pressdemo.bsky.social update. There's been lots of chitchat among Santa Rosa friends about the impending school closures, and lots of confusion about how the decision will be made. Best place to stay in the loop (aside from attending these meetings yourself) is here:

Educators: In this week's newsletter, our #RumorGuard slidedeck breaks down how to debunk this viral falsehood ⤵️ with keyword searches, a short video tutorial & more! 💡 Perfect for using with students: bit.ly/RGslidedeck #AcademicSky

It's that time of year again for journalists to feel crippling self-doubt* (and ok yes, inspiration) by clicking through roundups of the best story topics unearthed this year www.bloomberg.com/features/202... *jk that's year-round.

Felt this

Libraries are offering free health and wellness classes across the US

A great starter pack if you want to learn about news literacy:

The new Cruel Intentions series was fantastic. Already binged it all with my sister! We loved the way the series took elements from the film (like the car, the necklace, the bet) and made its own story out of it. Cece and Lucien were my fav characters. Caroline is so, so cruel! 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

@noupside.bsky.social hits the nail on the head in her newsletter on the recent Pew study about news influencers: Many of these content creators depend on the *original reporting* produced by traditional newsrooms.

Yes!

Don't let misinformation dominate the dinner table this holiday season. Here are a few tips for having productive conversations #Thanksgiving #Misinformation #NewsLiteracy

New from me: Two influencers make very similar content promoting Amazon products. They dress the same. They buy the same stuff. They even have a similar tattoo. Now one is suing the other, claiming her rival won't stop copying her. But who influenced whom? www.theverge.com/2024/11/26/2...

My mini review of Wicked: Cynthia Erivo’s eyes cinched that movie. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is a fun thread. It’s tricky, though!

Here it is, this week’s special issue of The Sift! Take this quiz to see how skilled you are at evaluating wellness and science claims on TikTok, X, Facebook, Instagram, and yes — Bluesky, too! ⬇️

Parent involvement in schools ⬆️. 87% of K–12 students from English-speaking families had parents who reported attending a general school meeting in 2019, up from 79% in 1999. 75% Spanish-speaking families attended a school meeting in 2019, up from from 69% in 1999. nces.ed.gov/pubsearch/pu...

Great advice! 👍🏽

Really good tip. Adding to this. If you see “share if you agree!” or “BREAKING” - always worth the 30 second Google. Attempt at garnering absence immediacy or encouraging quick engagement are common tactics used when spreading misinformation.

Working on our next newsletter issues coming out early next week. Excited because these will be SPECIAL ISSUES with new free resources! Stay tuned & subscribe here: • The Sift for educators newslit.org/educators/si... • Get Smart About News for adults helping kids newslit.org/get-smart-ne... 🙂

Not what I expected

Pretty great that The Sift includes free slide decks for teachers. 💜

Another newsletter I co-write for @newslitproject.bsky.social is Get Smart About News, which is adapted from our educator newsletter and includes prompts to help adults engage with the kids in their life about news literacy. Here's today's issue of Get Smart About News:

The United States now has: • 45,020 reporters • 275,550 public relations specialists For every reporter, there are now six PR people. (data via U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics)

When I read Frog and Toad to my son I like to go deep and scratchy with my Toad voice. Definitely prefer Toad over Frog any day, although you can’t have one without the other. 💚
