The cartoon sums it up. But the reporting and editorials do not. The Times urges govt to do a deal with the US “urgently” but fails to explain to its readership what we stand to lose if we do. Maybe if the right hadn’t peddled Brexit so furiously and dishonestly, we wouldn’t now be on our knees.

With the MoD finally admitting after 70 years there 'may have been' radiation experiments on UK troops, if you are not yet familiar with the shocking Nuked Blood Scandal - one of the greatest injustices & worst cover-ups in British history - watch this jaw dropping report

Labour could have made the Youth Mobility scheme a positive. Instead they opposed it and now must frame it as a defeat, despite knowing all the time they'd have to accept something like it. God knows what kind of 4D chess calculation led them to this position. www.bestforbritain.org/feb_2025_mrp...

This is a seriously useful initiative by two seriously big minds. For too long parliament has been voiceless when it comes to international agreements. Given the general state of things, it's imperative something is done about it quickly. This would be a good vehicle to do so.

Morning Bluesky. A petulant, whiny man-child in one chart.

California has overtaken Japan to become the world’s fourth-largest economy behind the US, China and Germany, Governor Gavin Newsom announces.

"The government’s ‘red lines’ are stifling debate" Exactly that.

🔥😡 A private Heritage Foundation workshop took place last month aimed at dismantling the EU.

Trying to do research in the NHS is increasingly getting paid public money to be continuously ghosted (for months) by over stressed and under resourced organisations. Often because govt likes to prioritise the "front line" making everything else - including vital research - grind to a halt.

Excoriating from @georgemonbiot.bsky.social on Government’s new Planning & Infrastructure Bill which “betrays an undemocratic impatience with the people, motivated by the blatant appeasement of corporate power…the worst assault on England’s ecosystems in living memory”👇

The Turtle Dove flutters into our #SpringArrivalSpotlight today, migrating from Africa in April. Listen for their gentle ‘turr-turr’ in gardens and countryside - a sound of summer that’s sadly growing quieter, but one that we’re working hard to protect.

Lovely piece about how the government sought to misuse FoI law, and how the government was defeated. Enjoy the story.

The Govt’s #PlanningBill would allow developers to pay cash to trash wildlife & the environment. The nature levy isn’t a tool for ecological recovery - it’s a license to kill nature. Pleased to join ecologists & experts to sign letter to MPs👇 @zero-hour.bsky.social @the-wildlifetrusts.bsky.social

"Experts warn that formally giving Crimea up to Russia would breach international law and potentially open the door for further global conflicts. The U.S. is essentially trying to negotiate Ukraine's surrender, and is surrendering its own international leadership by doing so.” #SlavaUkraini 🇺🇦

First Brexit, now this? It's so depressing to see international ecommerce essentially cut off. What a miserable insular little island we are becoming. www.theguardian.com/business/202...

Why are we not doing this? Never seen a more "no brainer" policy. Even people who are the most strongly opposed to immigration tend not to object to top scientists coming here.

“Framed as a bid to “better inform the public”, this move is in reality nothing short of a cynical political stunt – one designed to placate the rising wave of the radical right, led by Nigel Farage and Reform UK” bylinetimes.com/2025/04/24/k...

China says it will only talk to the US if Trump cancels all unilateral tariffs, the FT reports. Xi’s humiliation of Trump continues apace. It’s a shame Trump doesn’t hold the cards.

This is a terrible terrible destructive decision. These sorts of long running research programmes take decades to build and their insights accumulate over decades too - the longer they run, the more valuable they become. This is knowledge vandalism. Nothing new and shiny can replace it.

Krishan Guru-Murthy, "So near and yet so far is the refrain from America, clearly annoyed that Ukraine doesn't just agree to hand over territory to Russia"

“62 MPs said the govt should work with the EU to create new opportunities for British young people to work and travel in the EU, similar to agreements with…Australia and Canada” It really shouldn’t be such a tough ask. But well done to those who are trying. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/a...

Bravo these 60 Labour MPs! The letter suggests further Brexit trade barriers could be removed through a Canada-style deal involving a mutual recognition agreement (MRA) on conformity assessment, allowing standards of goods to be tested in the UK before export. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/a...

"The EU Commission has slapped tech giants Apple and Meta with penalties for breaching the EU’s new digital rulebook. Apple faces a €500 million fine for breaking the regulation’s rules for app stores, while Meta drew a penalty of €200 million for its 'pay or consent' advertising model."

The Tories are expected to lose control of all their 16 councils in the May Day elections and be reduced to just 400 councillors. Labour will hold firm but big wins for Reform, Lib Dems and Greens.

This is a fascinating read for those who’ve engaged with the discussion here about China potentially replacing the US as a European ally. Well worth your time.

When your country is a community that cares for each other and your environment you make decisions that improve everyone’s lives. It would be so easy to #EndAutogenocide #3E www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...

All of us, whether we’re trans or not, deserve dignity and respect, and the freedom to go about our daily lives without fear of abuse or harassment. Govt has urgent Qs to answer about how it will ensure those rights for trans people - sadly I didn't get those answers yesterday.

Labour ministers are apparently ruling out scrapping the two-child benefit cap - in other words, choosing to keep 600,000 children in poverty. Meanwhile govt refuses to consider a wealth tax which could ÂŁ24bn. Hard to find the words for this level of unnecessary cruelty.

Happy St George's Day! This should be a day everyone in England can celebrate together, whatever our backgrounds & whether born here or not. All too often Englishness is hijacked by the Right. My recent book, #AnotherEngland, is my attempt to start to try to take it back🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Germany's Merz is working to help Europe gain complete independence from US. He has proposed a new European defense union to replace NATO, including nuclear cooperation with France & UK. "Russia & [US] are coming together here, over the heads of Ukraine and therefore also over the heads of Europe"

Trump wants Ukraine to cede Crimea and conquered Ukrainian land to Russia, after for Ukraine to not join NATO Why is Labour wasting time appeasing Trump with a watered down trade deal -an economic partnership- when we have the world's best trading bloc on our doorstep, the EU?

My work documenting Trump's attacks on science has been covered in @resprofnews.bsky.social www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-worl... "There's this intense fear in science of being seen as political... I've been attacked for it, but sometimes there is just truth"

"There are a small group of extremists on the far-right who want to see trans people victimised. They are using this as a wedge issue to channel hate. And frankly, the vast majority of people in this country don't want that.

At the 2001 Laeken Summit, EU nations agreed to aim for a basic pension of 40% of average earnings by 2007 and work towards 60% thereafter. This was a non-binding commitment, not a directive State pension by 2017: £7,440 - UK £15,811 - France £26,366 - Germany £26,630 - Spain What a contrast 😱
