Today is the last day of @AnForamUisce's national survey on water quality of local waterways. If you are in a community group or just a member of the general public please fill it in to contribute to this important research. 👇 https://survey.euro.confirmit.com/wix/p872876221944.aspx

France: State responsible for jogger's toxic algae death. Court found the state "bore partial responsibility for the 2016 death of Jean-Rene Auffray, who died of exposure to deadly toxins. The problem of toxic algae bloom stems from the region's farms." p.dw.com/p/4wPYN?maca...

"Illegal peat harvesting is still taking place on a large scale" "Local authority enforcement is ‘patently inadequate’" It's "catastrophic for the environment" “Operators engaged in" it are "destroying our precious natural environments, & this needs to stop.” www.irishtimes.com/environment/...

Rivers across Europe are heavily broken up by barriers like dams and weirs With around 1.2 million in place, these structures massively disrupt biodiversity and threaten healthy waters 💦 But with the Nature Restoration Law, that’s about to change - see how ⬇️ eeb.org/wp-content/u...

"Irish lakes at risk of similar Lough Neagh algal event" "The study concluded that 7 of the 35 lakes included in this study – 20% – face this high potential threat of experiencing" harmful algal bloom events. Stronger protection measures are needed! www.agriland.ie/farming-news...

Cork anglers fear local river has been polluted again as ‘sludge’ visible in the water www.independent.ie/regionals/co...

Lady's Island lake is the end result of decades of agricultural nitrogen water pollution. The only way we can turn the agricultural nitrogen pollution problem around is if those in power admit that their measures aren't working. It's time to actually listen to the evidence, not the spin.

SWAN member, @antaisce.bsky.social, had their Head of Advocacy @elainemcgoff.bsky.social on Primetime last night talking about the pollution crisis in Lady's Island Lake. Watch the full piece here: 👇https://www.rte.ie/player/series/prime-time/SI0000000825?epguid=IH10008770-25-0050

'We're going to end up with a toxic goo lagoon': Environmental crisis in Wexford "All the various enforcement & accountability arms of the State –local authority, inspections, Teagasc– all the state mechanisms, have failed to protect Lady’s Island Lake" jrnl.ie/6736308

What a win, very well done to @riveractionuk.bsky.social 👏 www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Good to have a cohesive approach in the draft Marine Planning Policy Statement but there are 0 mentions of nature and only 2 references to biodiversity, we must demand that the protection and restoration of our seas are prioritised. Consultation open until 7 July: www.gov.ie/en/departmen...

'Government policy on nitrates is designed to fail, but to keep the derogation regardless. The policy is to sacrifice water quality where it cannot be improved with modest interventions, to support agricultural exports.' www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2025...

"There is still a small chance of rescuing Wexford lagoon from the same fate as Lough Neagh" but "if the government’s Nitrates Action Plan permits too much nitrates and phosphates to be deposited in sensitive catchments, then""pollution is inevitable". www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2025...

Ecocide series: It's only a matter of time before Algal Blooms impact our water supply 'Years of inadequate action, insufficient enforcement and underfunded infrastructure investments have created conditions ripe for recurring crises.' jrnl.ie/6727598

National Biodiversity Data Centre presenting at #EPAWater2025 conference showing that invasive species cost us a quarter of a billion euro each year.

An Foram Uisce at #EPAWater2025 conference presenting key research finding that installing low/moderate water-saving tech in houses can save 20Ls pay day for just €180 per house, making €9.7m state savings by 2030.

SWAN are out in force at the EPA Water Conference #EpAWater2025💪💧

Unfortunately Micheál Martin didn't make any new commitments to protect Irish waters at #UNOC2025 More countries are announcing ambitious new plans throughout the week and we hope that this will encourage those falling behind to do the same However, good news on the #BBNJ to protect the high seas!

Thank you to all TDs and staff who attended our Marine Protected Areas briefing in the Dáil today. While some of the team are at the UN Ocean Conference in France, others are working hard at home to inspire action for Ireland’s incredible ocean. #FairSeas #MPAs

We are at the #BlueMarch in Nice, France ahead of the United Nations Ocean Conference.  Stay tuned for updates all next week from the most important ocean meeting on Earth.  #FairSeas #UNOC

“Ireland’s plan to weaken legal protections for waterways will push many of them beyond recovery” “the urgent need for restoration is clear” “Instead, they will face a future as engineered channels.” Good explanation of the issue by @ellamcsweeney 👇 www.irishtimes.com/environment/...

Ireland and marine life: 'We should hang our heads in shame at our failure to protect the sea' “The Taoiseach will no doubt reiterate at Nice how Ireland is committed to protecting 30% of our waters in MPAs by 2030, but the window for this is fast shrinking.“ www.thejournal.ie/readme/irela...

On #WildSalmonDay note that wild salmon in Irish rivers declined by 90% between 1975 and 2022. Will we someday lose this iconic fish?! We know the causes of declines include climate change, weirs, pollution & open-net fish farms. We must do more to tackle these issues now! 📣

Good to see TDs raising our concerns on the proposed lowering of env. protections on 10% of our waters. @ivanabacik.bsky.social "Rather than trying to address the problems head on, it feels like government are throwing in the towel on our rivers"-Jennifer Whitmore m.independent.ie/regionals/wi...

"The concern is the standards will be brought down & no further effort will be made." The decisions "need to be based on clear data & local knowledge & be accessible.” Listen to SWAN CEO on KFM (16m in) on the proposed drop in env. protections on 10% of our waters. www.kfmradio.com/on-air/podca...

'Bathing restrictions imposed at popular Mayo Blue Flag beach' www.independent.ie/regionals/ma... 'Swimming at Mayo beach ‘may cause illness’ as restrictions imposed' m.independent.ie/regionals/ma... Pollution is stopping swimming again.🛑 Blue flag & 'good' quality beaches can all be affected.🤮

'Whales leave Cork waters, putting watchers out of business' '"Dolphins & hump whales are gone. I’ve given it up in disgust. There is loads of plankton but the bird life is gone & the fish are gone. It’s an empty, lifeless sea."'-Ex-whale watching tour operator www.irishtimes.com/ireland/2025...

SWAN has joined the call for a moratorium on deep-sea mining. Up to 90% of deep-sea species are still unknown & mining would destroy habitats millions of yrs old-with no method of restoration. Organisations & individuals can sign an open letter to world leaders. www.theoceanandus.org/uploads/1/2/...

World-class whale watching in Ireland—no more? Overfishing (esp. sprat) is driving them away, hurting coastal communities & eco-tourism. SWAN supports banning large trawlers in inshore waters to protect these incredible giants that visit our shores. 🐋 www.rte.ie/radio/radio1...

Majority of councils miss farm inspection targets vital for water protection “This has gone on for long enough. Agriculture is the main source of water pollution in Ireland, they need to show willingness & start doing something to fix it.” - SWAN CEO jrnl.ie/6712151

The Irish Whale & Dolphin Group have pointed out that they first raised the alarm about unregulated sprat fishing in 2010 but the government has yet to act... now the whales are gone because there nothing for them to eat. Disgraceful! www.rte.ie/radio/radio1...

Listen back to SWAN CEO Sinéad O'Brien on East Coast FM talking about the proposal by the government to lower environmental protections on 10% of our rivers, lakes & coastal waters by designating them as 'heavily modified', without enough assessment or explanation for this.

"Despite a multitude of legal protections that should be preventing this, we have still ended up with what is essentially a dead lake. The government has absolutely failed to put in the protections that are necessary for this lake." - @elainemcgoff.bsky.social on Lady's Island Lake in Wexford

“The govt’s plan to lower protections for 1 in 10 of our rivers, lakes, & coastal waters, without evidence or proper explanation, shows disregard for the public" is "out of step with EU rules and puts wildlife like kingfishers, otters & trout at risk.” www.agriland.ie/farming-news...

Don't miss this chance to join a positive, flexible organisation and to contribute to a healthy environment for nature and people with these exciting roles in SWAN 👇 💙🌊🐟🐬🐳

"Hundreds of rivers will be condemned to decline under Government plans to lower environmental standards for them" SWAN has 'grave concerns' that "466 stretches of rivers, lakes & estuaries" to be "classified as 'heavily modified water bodies' www.independent.ie/irish-news/p...

"Ireland has 33 species of mayfly. Even under immense pressure from humans, they adapt." www.irishtimes.com/environment/...

Thanks to all of you who sent in a submission to call for a halt to this designation. 👏🙌 You can read our SWAN submission to the public consultation here: swanireland.ie/wp-content/u...

The An Taisce response to this consultation: 'It is our firm view, that to proceed with any HMWB designation based on the documentation and analysis provided would be to infringe on the meaning and proper legal interpretation of the Water Framework Directive.' www.antaisce.org/submission-o...

Is your local river proposed to get lower environmental protections by Govt?! The list includes parts of the: Boyne Liffey Lee Shannon Corrib Barrow Brosna Dee Inny Deel to name just a few. 10% of our river and lake waterbodies!🚨 Email a submission to stop this today! 🛑👇

First water becomes undrinkable, then unswimmable, then untouchable "Ireland must not follow England’s example on maintaining waterways" "it is striking how quickly overall Irish river quality has declined in recent decades" www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2025...

Fascinating @antaisce.bsky.social event tonight linking River Guardians in Columbia with Save Our Sperrins here by exploring how rights of nature can help protect our rivers from destructive gold mining.

🚨Urgent Action🚨 The govt is trying to lower environmental protections for our rivers & lakes! We need to stop this before tomorrow, Friday 23rd. Read more here: swanireland.ie/take-action/... Click here to send a pre-made email submission asking them to stop: tinyurl.com/yu2dujb9
