@benkentish.bsky.social I think the UK and other governments are keeping their heads down in the belief that ‘it’s only four years.’ This is a mistake- Trump is destroying the democratic process and he may stand and win in 2028, and if not Vance may win and be just

@mrjamesob.bsky.social Starmer is falling into the all too human trap of putting off the huge uncomfortable argument because although he knows things can’t go on as they are he fears confronting it may make things even worse. He must realise power is worthless unless he uses it to make things better

Listening to the Merseyside derby on @bbc5live.bsky.social I often find if I’m not listening carefully, John Murray’s signature ‘premature exaltation’ commentary style leaves me thinking the score must already be about 10-9.

@mrjamesob.bsky.social ‘governments crash and systems fall, ‘cos unity is powerful. Lights go out, walls come tumbling down.’ Paul Weller. Community action is definitely how to do it.

Coming this side of the Atlantic soon, if Elon can get away with it. Tighten the rules!

Governments around the world including our own need to wake up to this and tighten the rules. He’ll do this everywhere he can if he thinks it will increase his power.

The only thing you need to be a Socialist is to realize that the rich are far too rich, and that all their stolen wealth needs to be redistributed back to everyone else. So a Socialist is basically anybody with a brain.

It strikes me that we have a problem with taxation and where the burden falls in this country. Clearly, if you have more money than you need or even could ever spend, taxing that excess income is not going to hurt you, no matter what the percentage. Whereas taxing people who need every penny 1/n

@mrjamesob.bsky.social the reason to keep talking about it is to help over time to win over enough people that it is no longer a hot potato. How will it stop being a hot potato if no one persuades the doubters?

@mrjamesob.bsky.social it’s the Arsene Wenger defence (I didn’t see it)

Casar: You can quickly explain Doge with just two numbers. First: $8 million a day. That’s how much Elon Musk collects in federal government contracts. Second: $65 a day. That’s how much the average senior—someone who has worked their entire life—gets from Social Security.…

@mrjamesob.bsky.social if a microwave oven door swings open to the left, wouldn’t you open it with your left hand and place the food with your right? I’m a bit ambidextrous so I’m not sure if my favoured hand would want to open the door or hold the food.

@mrjamesob.bsky.social can you eliminate ‘as I said to your researcher’ please? Thank you muchly.

@mrjamesob.bsky.social in an ideally funded and resourced education system, the best course for each child to maximise their potential would be identified. However, as with most things, efficiency is prioritised over effectiveness, meaning children are made to fit the system instead of the reverse.

Cry for me Britannia. Over 85,000 children in Britain living in extreme poverty. Nursery-aged child hospitalised malnourished, caused heart condition, teeth removed. Govts prioritise arbitrary fiscal rules, won't tax the rich, redistribute. 1% has more wealth than 70% of the population combined.

Economists urge Rachel Reeves to bend fiscal rules instead of cutting welfare. Govt doesn't want to tax the rich. But imposed two child benefit cap, cut winter fuel payments, froze income tax thresholds. Can't rebuild without boosting purchasing power of the bottom 50%. Must redistribute.

Regressive National Insurance (NI). UK employees pay 8% NI on incomes between £12,570 & £50,270. 2% above that. Rich pay a lower proportion of income in NI. Govt can charge higher rates in incomes above £100k, £150k, etc. Collect £bns. No need for austerity. Tax the rich.

@mrjamesob.bsky.social I thoroughly enjoyed today’s show. My thought on billionaires: If they had any concept of having enough, they wouldn’t be billionaires. Hence they can never be satisfied, so with untrammelled power without consequence they would impoverish us all to enrich themselves.

On the face of it, McFadden’s plan to offer to pay people to leave the civil service sounds very much like Musk’s Doge. However, the underlying rationale is what counts. If it’s to improve efficiency while crucially maintaining effectiveness, that makes sense, right? 1/2

@robinince.bsky.social 201st episode celebration because it’s payback for the Millennium.

Worried about health? Rejoining the EU would mean more money to spend on the NHS. Worried about education? Rejoining the EU would mean more money to fix schools blighted by crumbly concrete. Worried about defence? Rejoining the EU would mean more money to get our Armed Forces fighting fit. etc.
