US anti-immigration sentiment is always shot through with some hypothetical "worthiness" equation that is supposed to rationalize the system. I don't think the ideal of America as a country where anyone can sign up for the national project was on the ballot.

I think the party should seek and reward ambitions beyond turning 1s into 1.01s in a handful of swing states. The only long term solution to our problem is a durable majority coalition that can reform the country towards something that isn't naked corruption and/or sadism.
