Yup

Trump’s list shows “39% duty” on imports to the EU. Come on. EU duties are low, often free. I filtered the whole EU tariff (download below FYI) for MFN rates over 30%. Of 1000s of tariff lines, only fruit juices, tobacco, and fermented grape must are over 30%. circabc.europa.eu/ui/group/0e5...

Source: CNN amp.cnn.com/cnn/2025/02/... My job happens to be monitoring customs tariffs of a large number of countries. Tariffs are used as primary revenue for governments of some very poor countries, not of global players. Abolishing the IRS and replacing income taxes with tariffs? Here’s the math.

Another Lyft driver was from Croatia, also in the US over 20 years. Initially he was neutral about Trump. Beats electing a woman. But he was appalled by that meeting with Zelensky. About immigrants, he said it was cruel to target them. “No one wants to leave their country. You tear your soul apart.”

One Lyft driver was from Paris. Twenty years in Florida and hadn’t looked back. From childhood he had imagined himself living in Florida; his relatives used to call him “the Miami guy.” When he entered the Green Card lottery, he just knew he’d win. He was an optician and drove Lyft on weekends.

The airport taxi was the first car we rode in on our weekend trip to Fort Lauderdale. I watched the map until we turned onto the road to Dania Beach. This driver was from Haiti and had lived in Fort Lauderdale 20 years. He then took us off our route. I had him drop us anywhere to cut our losses.

A few of the observations made in Rochester today, March 4th.

Timothy Snyder is one of those I would most trust to say what is essential about the hideous turn we took on Friday. We will be feeling the shame and pity and horror of it for a long time, without even reckoning up the consequences. snyder.substack.com/p/five-failu...
