❤️ Loved my chat with 13 year old music blogger @logansoundsoff.bsky.social ☀️ His knowledge & passion for music is inspiring & he asked fab questions 👍🎶 At the end , because my new album is quite political he recommended I listen to ‘ Bedtime for democracy’ by the Dead Kennedys ! Class 👌!

This in one of my Bible tunes @tanitatikaram.bsky.social I'm making a play list for my 50th. Celebrating on Lewis and it will feature this woman more than once. Thank you for this song. Its been an audio hug for a long time. youtu.be/rIyn-ZQXmMg?...

Other work by the Ladybird artists. A particularly chirpy book cover by artist SR Badmin, 1956

From a Report of the Senckenberg Society for Natural Sciences, Frankfurt, 1914.

From Abatina (fickleness) to Zinnia (thoughts of absent friends), and from Absence (wormwood) to Zest (Lemon), the marvellous Language of Flowers: An Alphabet of Floral Emblems (1857) pairs up hundreds of flowers with hundreds of emotions: publicdomainreview.org/collection/t...

From the very same paragraph in Orwell's essay: "England has got to be true to herself. She is not being true to herself while the refugees who have sought our shores are penned up in concentration camps, and company directors work out subtle schemes to dodge their Excess Profits Tax."

Miners at a TUC demonstration, Hyde Park London, 1974 by the late Nick Hedges

Morning all. Photographer Nick Hedges. Child dreaming on a Lambeth tenement balcony,1969.

Salford lads, 1969, photo by Nick Hedges (commissioned by housing charity Shelter).

We were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Nick Hedges earlier this week. Nick was a wonderful documentary photographer and his work inspired - and will continue to inspire - photographers for many years to come.

Really sad to hear that the wonderful photographer Nick Hedges has passed. I was lucky enough to interview him last year and he was wonderful - insightful, reflective and funny. His pictures will really stand the test of time I think. www.theguardian.com/artanddesign...

Amnesty International UK said it was “deeply concerned at the use of counter-terrorism powers to target protest groups”. Unless @yvettecooper-mp.bsky.social has something serious on Palestine Action beyond vandalism (you cannot “terrorise” inanimate objects) then this is looney tunes stuff.

Cabin Cafe, Upper Wortley Road, Leeds, 1975, photo by Peter Mitchell. Mr Gower had just quit engineering and was planning to do up the place.

In case you can't tell what just happened, JK Rowling instructed her followers to take photos of anyone in a women's restroom who doesn't match their idea of Western feminine beauty standards. Short hair? Thick cheekbones/jaw? Too tall or broad-shouldered? You're now "a man" and will be harassed.

Republicans want you to forget they’re ripping health care away from over 16 million people while Trump wages a new endless war against Iran. That’s Republican leadership for you.

Amid the threats of retribution from Iran following the U.S. military strike on three Iranian nuclear sites, critics have ramped up their scrutiny of the 22-year-old who was assigned to a major terrorism-prevention post by President Donald Trump. www.mediaite.com/media/news/c...

It's one of those things like "the velvet underground only sold 6,000 records but everyone who bought it started their own band" but for everyone who answered "yes" to this being given a national newspaper column

“The creative industries represent much of the best of what the UK and indeed humanity does. The idea of handing over its output for free is abhorrent.” —Martin Wolf

Journalists at the Farage press conference repeating Reform's framing of this policy as "robin hood" because the non-dom fee will be redistributed to poorer workers, whilst missing the fact that it hands tens of billions of pounds in tax cuts to the wealthiest people already living in the UK

Reform UK is proposing a "Britannia card" that would let wealthy foreigners pay a £250k fee to move to the UK, and live here exempt from all tax on their foreign assets What they don't say: it would cost the UK £34bn Report here, and thread below: buff.ly/gpe2Dpf

One reason the revolt on disability benefits is looking so substantial is the line being used to defend it lacks any integrity. To claim that the purpose of cutting PIP - a non-means tested benefit - is to help people back into work requires saying something untrue.

On LBC @zoejardiniere.bsky.social lists 3 previous instances where military aircraft have been targeted by campaigners in order to prevent them being used in war crimes, and she describes the govt banning Palestine Action as terrorists as an abuse of state power. Well said.

Brilliant @carladenyer.bsky.social at #PMQs 👏👏 This Refugee Week, let’s remember: Welcome & compassion are core British values 🙏❤️ But our solidarity with people forced from their homes is undermined by politics of hatred & the failing Home Office - it’s time for radical change!

🔴 Remember Owen Paterson? Well, the former Tory minister - who resigned as an MP after an "egregious" breech of Westminster's lobbying rules - is now back lobbying.... Against a ban on MPs' 2nd jobs 😜 Full story on Democracy for Sale: democracyforsale.substack.com/p/disgraced-...

Farage’s latest policy would let super-rich foreigners pay a one-off £250k fee and live here exempt from all tax on their foreign assets. Experts have said the policy would cost £34bn over five years. As I wrote recently, Farage is an economic car-crash waiting to happen…

In 2022 P&O Ferries illegally sacked 800 workers. Govt did nought. Not filing annual accounts within legal time limits is a criminal offence. P&O hasn't. Fined for not filing accounts for year to 31 Dec 2021, £1500; for 2022, £3000; 2023 not yet filed, maybe fined £3000. No penalties on directors

Happy Daniel Hannon Day to all who celebrate it. I hope you all enjoy the fireworks as we mark perhaps the worst piece of political forecasting going. www.reaction.life/p/britain-lo...

I just have to say, as a historian of the Reconstruction-era Klan, that masked paramilitaries are very bad and masked vigilantes are even worse and there are causal links between the two and none of this is good for democracy.

The BBC’s decision to pull a documentary about Israeli war crimes in Gaza shows how its enforcement of 'impartiality' almost always benefits just one side www.adambienkov.co.uk/p/the-right-...

I don’t understand Yvette Cooper’s moral universe where we are supposed to feel more threatened by protesters spray painting war planes than our own government’s steadfast support of a regime who everyday find more horrendous ways to murder people .

Honestly, even the Chinese and Russians never made me do this to get a visa. Even the North Koreans, who made me hand over my phone for the duration of my visit, never made this demand.

Nine years ago the godfather of Brexit, Lord Daniel Hannan, predicted life in Brexit Britain in June 2025. Roll the tape… (VO by @gavinesler.bsky.social. Part 2 below👇)

Companies with no UK director are more likely to commit fraud. Can't touch directors if they live abroad. How many such companies are there? Minister says: "Companies House does not currently hold this statistic". How can the govt combat illicit financial flows and call culprits to account?

I am old enough to recall as far back as 2018 when Cooper sported a suffragette rosette. A reminder that the suffragettes, unlike Palestine Action, actually planted bombs and destroyed property.
