It's lousy that the Green Party has been excluded from official French + English language debates in #Canada's 2025 elections. We urgently need to discuss environmental stakes facing us; none of the other parties (esp. the Conservatives) are taking them seriously. www.ctvnews.ca/federal-elec...

#Chicago transit faces fiscal cliff: officials see $730 million budget shortfall as chance to reorganize the metro area's 4 separate transit agencies. slate.com/business/202...

"Canada Strong Pass will provide children under 18 with free seats on Via Rail when they travel with their parents." Mark Carney's Liberals are promising free seats for kids on national passenger rail this summer—if they win on April 28. @viarailcanada.bsky.social liberal.ca/mark-carneys...

"A city is a means of providing a maximum number of social contacts and satisfactions. When the open spaces gape too widely, and dispersal is too constant, people lack a stage for their activities and the drama of their daily life lacks sharp focus." Contrast this...

Wait—now they're trying to horn in on our monopoly on apologizing for everything? We're the ones famous for saying "sorry," eh! American takes out ads in #Vancouver to apologize to Canadians. www.ctvnews.ca/vancouver/ar...

"Why can't we have nice things here?" Because of Republicans, of course. The latest: Trump officials kill federal grant for high-speed rail between #Dallas + #Houston. A line that would have saved people of #Texas endless pain on freeways. www.texastribune.org/2025/04/14/t...

"Bicycles let people move with greater speed without taking up significant amounts of scarce space, energy, or time...Cyclists become masters of their own movements without blocking those of their fellows."

Any discussion of why the U.S. doesn’t have high-speed rail should include at least *a mention* of the myriad ways that Republicans have blocked it: www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Need some positive news? Around the world, a passenger rail renaissance is well under way. I document the train-love in my weekly newsletter HIGH SPEED. 🚅🧵

#Vietnam has moved up the start date on construction of its high-speed rail line to 2026. This southeast Asian nation is spending $67 billion on the project. Meanwhile, the Trump admin is putting $4B already allocated to high-speed in #California under "review." www.railway.supply/en/vietnam-h...

WOW! 85 second headways?! Meanwhile, LRT can't even get signal preemption in St. Paul...

"It's a world record." Line 14 of the #Paris Métro, a 27-kilometer automated route, is now running trains every 85 seconds, or 42 an hour. Each train can carry 1,200 passengers. It's expected to serve 1 *million* riders a day later this year. www.leparisien.fr/info-paris-i...

Paris' Metro Line 14 is now running every 85 seconds at peak times, or 42 trains/hour. The 17-mile automated line, which was extended last year, serves 800,000 daily riders and is expected to serve 1 million every day once Line 15 opens late next year.

Hard to figure out which nation will own the future--maybe the one that can sell you an EV for under $8k electrek.co/2025/04/08/b...

Pole bases! The beginning of rail electrification in Toronto!

An interesting example of progressive non-BRT bus improvement in North America is Québec City's Metrobus system. The system was first launched in 1992, addressing the basics (higher frequencies, longer stop spacing, some bus lanes on busier corridors) and has been expanding progressively since.

This is true. But it's also true that we need to build high-speed rail, rather than freeways + runways. "A new report shows how Amtrak + railroads can reduce 'dead time' and increase speeds for less than it would cost to build new high-speed rail lines." www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Alstom to invest €150m to increase high speed train production capacity https://www.railwaygazette.com/business/alstom-to-invest-150m-to-increase-high-speed-train-production-capacity/68606.article

Is Bus Rapid Transit a poor solution? Marco Chitti makes a strong case that cities could achieve better results with signal priority and dedicated lanes, without stressing about full implementation. Looking forward to hearing how @dhidalgo65.bsky.social and @humantransit.bsky.social respond...

Good morning people! Yesterday I released this lovely episode about the deep ancient and fascinating history of the potato, a tuber that went to conquer the world! please have a listen, and share far and wide! open.spotify.com/episode/1MIH... #podcast #potato #andes #incas #history

THIS JUST IN. As if anybody needed another reason not to fly to the United States.

Imagine 21 fully loaded 737s going down, with no survivors—every day. That's how many people will die in car crashes in the world in next 24 hrs. Based on 1.35 million road deaths in 2024, 39,000 of them in US. 🧵

Un autre ville? Non. A 1km d'ici Bravo pour la refonte de Castelnau.

"There's Plenty of Street Space for All the People-- But Not for All the Vehicles." General Electric ran this ad in magazines...in 1940. Over three-quarters of a century later, this obvious truth still eludes too many cities.

"The only airport in the center of #Paris is a train station." I love this ad for the high-speed service from Switzerland to France. One of the hidden costs of air travel is the dreaded airport transfer... 🛫🚅🧵
