At this point my and other UK and EU universities need to take a much firmer stand of solidarity on behalf of our colleagues in Belgrade. They're fighting the kind of authoritarian destruction of intellectual life that threatens us all in Europe.

As we protest statues that glorify racist ideology, we also need to think about the things that ended up inside of museums because of assumptions about white superiority. Here's one story - of meteorites, pandemic, and Minik, the boy who lost his parents and his whole world.

A British right wing culture war magazine, The Critic, has published an attack on me for the objections I make to historical misinformation. Here’s my response: alanlester.co.uk/blog/a-lesse...

Fun fact: autistic people don’t have to be exceptional or “useful” to deserve the right to exist and the right to dignity and respect, hope that helps. Shoutout to my high needs autistic folks and my fellow low needs, we are rad no matter what the worm controlled ghoul says

As a historian of eugenics, I can tell you that the "taxes" thing is straight up from sterilization eugenics. Not only that, it represents an even more extreme form of early 20thC. eugenics that I study: euthanasia eugenics. They are tax burdens therefore they shouldn't exist. 1/2

We already know of over 1,000 student visa terminations. The true number is likely significantly higher. Very few have anything to do with pro-Palestinian advocacy. The overwhelming majority seem to be the result of automated terminations for any contact with law enforcement, no matter how minor.

On the anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, we thought we'd answer a question that's often asked, "If they raised the Mary Rose, why not raise the Titanic?" Allow our scaled diagram to explain...

Obviously things have got dramatically worse in the US recently, and I don't want to diminish that, but I've been at *so many* conferences in the UK on topics like empire, humanitarianism and development where multiple speakers from the Global South have been denied visas or held at the border

This thread, and this point in particular, is important. I refused to travel to the USA when the ‘Muslim ban’ was in place and missed out on doing lots of events. Only one person acknowledged that’s they would make a note of saying I was unable to contribute for this reason when publishing.

I've got a joke about Procrustes, but it's too long and needs to be cut down to size.

Re-upping this for the Sunday crowd: my weekly round-up of article and podcast recommendations. All reposts (and subscriptions) much appreciated. x

That saying about knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing seems appropriate here.

Normal dogs have vets. Greyhounds have topologists.

“They’re really, really afraid.” At least 50 Arizona State international students have had their visas revoked and one has been detained for 10 days. The reason appears to be participation in anti-genocide protests. azluminaria.org/2025/04/07/a...

Forcible transfer (ethnic cleansing) is not a “choice”
