Hotter take: yeah, it is.

This will not bring the temple down but these are the worst kind of resignations for a PM. When a friend and much liked minister quits on a pure principle shared by most colleagues - over time that's the most corrosive.

In my whole life I will never experience a drug as powerful as centrism

the trick is we do not have a real shortfall of £140M or anything remotely like that. it is a big number to scare us derived in from a mix of projections and an arbitrarily high target annual surplus, as far as one can tell from what we've been told

Don't be intimidated by the number of questions - you do NOT have to answer them all. You can answer as many or as few as you like, and the ALCS has nice, simple guidance and advice for answering the important ones. www.alcs.co.uk/news/your-ri...

I worked with middle school students recently who literally didn't know Google searches produced links to other websites. They just typed an entire question into the search bar & used the AI summary as their source. The Internet is absolutely cooked

The government's consultation on AI and copyright closes today.

Thanks to @jordankistler.bsky.social and @tattersdill.bsky.social I've been introduced to Bothrodon pridii (1927), 'an Extinct Serpent of Gigantic Dimensions' (namely 60ft), whose gigantic fang turned out to be the prong broken off a spider conch.

Sometimes you just have to lay down the law

This is the silliest media phenomenon since the pivot to video www.theguardian.com/gnm-press-of...

The Government is considering allowing AI companies to freely use your works, unless you opt-out. This is unfair and unworkable. Now is your chance to tell them what you think! Submit a response to their AI consultation using the guidance below. www.alcs.co.uk/news/your-ri...

I know it's a Guardian editorial and I know everyone following me already knows this, but this is very well put indeed. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

“A new settlement is desperately needed – one that properly restores a sector that delivers a public good to the public realm. And which enables a sense of professional vocation, for those who work within it, to be renewed.” #EduSky www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

I cannot stress this enough: no

Higher education feels like it's on fire right now. & we have a government happy to sit back and watch it burn. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

NASA did a feature on me last year. It was up this weekend but now when you click on the link you get a 404 message.

Want to be more involved with the society? Join our exec! We are seeking three new members of the executive committee. Details here: www.bsls.ac.uk/2025/02/new-...

See now I’m starting to think that these people want a machine to summarize things for them because when a human does it, the human uses words like “no” and “that would hurt people” and “that’s illegal.”

Stop worrying about bats and newts? No Rachel Reeves MP – start worrying about the future of our economy if we tear down the nature it depends on. Nature isn’t a blocker; it’s the foundation of growth.

Wild that every piece of software has decided we need Clippy now.

"Everything I say leaks," Zuckerberg says in leaked meeting audio. "It sucks" www.404media.co/zuckerberg-s...

'"Is the government genuinely comfortable sitting on their hands and allowing this act of educational vandalism to be taking place," she said.' The answer to this question is YES. They have said so! www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

'Daybreaker' is out today! A joy to create this second Winter-themed song with #SimonArmitage — lt's warm, hopeful and a reminder that darkness is temporary and Spring is near. As Simon said, it's a song for that first day 'when it feels like sunlight is in the blood.' 🌞 kpriddy.lnk.to/daybreaker

The market continues to cradle us safely in its invisible hand

Paywall, but I think this could be emphasised more: the current government has effectively *taken the decision* that there should be fewer nursing graduates www.thetimes.com/uk/education...

So infringing copyright is suddenly bad now?

Again: they know. This is a design feature of their HE strategy

“The Constitution is unconstitutional” sums up the first few days nicely.

Would love to understand why every Democrat is not out there every second of the day explaining in plain English that Donald Trump has declared war on cancer patients.

It’s chiselled in stone in the main college “nerth gwlad ei gwybodaeth [a nation’s strength is in its learning]” Wales grows weaker every day.

When it comes, remember that governments of various colours have been carefully working towards this for my entire career. Large unis going under, with devastating local consequences, is a necessary part of the free market dream in higher education
