Here’s a riddle for you: what eats meat and lives in a bog in the UK? If you’re stuck, here’s a hint: think less teeth, more leaf. 🤓🌿 Or, skip to the end and find out all about this flesh-eating flora in this week’s #SurprisingScience 🌺

Really happy with how this piece of geological interpretation turned out: replicating the Precambrian-Triassic unconformity within the panel stand. When geology is hard to reach, why not bring part of it closer to the visitor?

🧪⚒️ Just posted Ruth Siddall @pavementgeology.bsky.social on #urbangeology. You can see so much geology on display in the building stone of almost any city, and often more clearly and certainly more conveniently than going to the field. She guides us through her favorite London urban geology walk.

Sure, Google's data centers consume tens of billions of litres of water yearly and emit more carbon dioxide than many nations, but on the other hand, you can look up Uranus and AI will show you a picture of Neptune. Never in the history of humanity, have we reached such speeds in making mistakes

Tholeiitic dolerite from Ben Hiant summit, Ardnamurchan, Scotland, which forms the highest point on the British mainland's most westerly projection. On a clear day the 360° (horizontal) panorama is unbeatable ... but this beauty is beneath your feet! #ThinSectionThursday ⚒️🧪🌋

My Canadian aunt came from Winnipeg - she'd have been 14 at the time. Never mentioned it though!

In other belated West Midlands rock news I do recall a headline from one of the music mags in 1980? that went along the lines of 'Digital Delay Affects Sabbath Tour' when Geezer nobbled his finger.

#TBT last weekend, when we visited the Nober Erratics in North Yorkshire. The Silurian (c. 430 Myr) boulders teetering on blocks of Lower Carboniferous (c. 350 Ma) bedrock, were probably deposited by melting ice sheets at the end of the last ice age, c. 12,000 years ago. Absolutely incredible 🤩

my mom, when I was 10: you don’t have to worry about going to hell, because we LIVE in hell, this PLANET is hell, all you have to do is endure till the end and not give up me, as a 10yo: that is dark, Mom me, as a grownup, living through *waves hands*: omg, such a hopeful way to look at things 🥲

This crazy #mineral (abhurite) occurs exclusively on tin ingots in shipwrecks!! 😮 It’s formed by the chemical reaction between tin & seawater. This SEM image from @amgueddfacymru.bsky.social shows tin ingots coated with abhurite from the SS Liverpool, which sank off the coast of Anglesey in 1863.
