While the gospels say that Judas led the Romans to Jesus, a new theory is gaining traction with some Biblical scholars. There is evidence, some say, that Judas merely shared Christ's location on an insecure group chat that accidentally included several Roman officials and journalists.

That whole "is it fascism?" debate seems kinda quaint now, doesn't it? www.propublica.org/article/trum...

"Where can you even start? I think the worst is the abuse of the rule of law. I don't think we've ever seen something like that, and I think we need to really fight back before we become something like Russia." —Caryn, "I work in art," Oakland, California, April 19, 2025

"What really gets me is the assault on all aspects of our life: climate, women's rights, immigration, tariffs, lack of due process; we're just going down a rabbit hole of injustice. —Amanda, home organizer, Oakland, California, April 19, 2025

Van Hollen says Abrego Garcia was surrounded by cameras during their meeting

ursula von der leyen tells zeit newspaper: “the west as we knew it no longer exists.” "europe is still a peace project. we don't have bros or oligarchs making the rules. we don't invade our neighbors, and we don't punish them."

This is good news. But reporters, please stop just repeating that this task force has anything to do with stopping antisemitism. It is about closing universities and about fomenting antisemitism. www.theguardian.com/education/20...

I am advocating for due process for Abrego Garcia.

“Terrible things are happening outside. Poor helpless people are being dragged out of their homes. Families are torn apart. Men, women, and children are separated. Children come home from school to find that their parents have disappeared.” Diary of Anne Frank January 13, 1943

The Nuremberg Trials would’ve been a lot easier if Nazis had taken selfies at their camps

It's now been over a month since Trump sent innocent man Andry Hernández to one of the world's worst prisons because of "Mom" and "Dad" tattoos. Like the others, he is being imprisoned with no contact with the outside world. Don't let him be forgotten.

Remember this isn't even the guy that the Supreme Court is insisting be brought back. This is ANOTHER guy picked up and shipped to the gulag for no reason.

When Andrew Tate was charged with rape and human trafficking, Trump intervened to fly him back to the US. When a working-class father of a disabled 5-year-old child was wrongfully deported and charged with NO crime, Trump refuses to lift a finger.

Reposting my review of Nikolaus Wachsmann’s superb history of the German concentration camp system, "KL." It’s a good time to read this book. www.wsj.com/articles/mem...

Not a bad time to read Applebaum’s classic history of the Gulag, Alexopoulos’s convincing interpretation of the Soviet camp system ("Illness and Inhumanity"), or Julius Margolin’s extraordinary memoir "Journey to the Land of the Zeks and Back."

"We can react by seeing all of this for what it is, and naming it by name: incipient state terror. We can react by associating ourselves with others who are repressed before we are. Only in solidarity do we affirm law."

NEW: We already broke the ICE tip line! The “Good Trouble” segment for the Daily Beans podcast today was to flood the ICE tip line with reports about Elon. Well done everyone! See the next post in this thread for what happened when I managed to get through 1/

The fact that the government is using charges of antisemitism to justify sending people to concentration camps is the most enraging manipulation of discourse that the current fascists have engaged in thus far. They’ll live out their Nazi fantasies all while claiming they are doing it for the Jews.

I don’t think a better headline could have been written about what happened yesterday. www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

The great thing about fighting back against this stuff is that if you end up losing anyway you get the same outcome you’d have gotten from complying but you don’t have to fucking hate yourself too.

BREAKING: Last night, the Harvard faculty chapter of the AAUP and the national AAUP filed a lawsuit & TRO to block the Trump administration from illegally demanding that we keep quiet and change how we teach and research at the point of a financial gun. actionnetwork.org/user_files/u...

Damn! THIS is what we've been needing from our elected officials! Pushing back, taking control of the narrative, and documenting what DOGE/Trump/Musk have been doing in depriving U.S. citizens of the govt services they have paid for. Brava @repstansbury.bsky.social! Thanks for showing how it's done.

Four R senators and four R House members could announce they're caucusing with the Dems for now, and will vote for Schumer for Majority Leader and Jeffries for Speaker, because the threat to the rule of law is dire. Meanwhile, they'll work with Democrats to construct guardrails against dictatorship.

Goodbye global tourism to the US. Who in their right mind would risk this?

This evening Professor Greg Downs appeared on MSNBC’s #PoliticsNation with the Rev. Al Sharpton to discuss the administration’s war on #history. #skystorians us.wildmoka.com/c/clip/tczpz2

It’s a recalibration of economic control. Oligarchs don’t live paycheck to paycheck. They have the capital to buy market dips and recoup faster, acquiring more assets at fire sale prices along the way. When the dust finally settles, they will own more. The rest of us will own less. A lot less.

Just a legal historian here reminding everyone that “high crimes and misdemeanors” do not need to be felonies. They can include political abuses and stupidity, like, hypothetically, destroying the economy and wiping out people’s savings in 3 days.

Do clients really want to hire a law firm known for how quickly it rolls over? Yet, now this is Paul Weiss's well deserved reputation.

August 2024

This is their crash. This is on them, too.

I do think it's worth marking and remembering that these people were willing to tolerate everything we've experienced since January and more provided it didn't disrupt the economy.

I get the stock market is bad but the equivalent has already happened to foreign aid, research funding, and public health. Everyone didn't freak out because there isn't some ticker on the news measuring the number of cancer researchers and Ebola prevention experts being fired.

The best case scenario is that this is a stock shorting scheme, and in a week, there will be masterful (non-existent) "dealmaking" that removes the tariffs after the billionaires buy the dip causing a massive transfer of wealth. That's the *best* case scenario.

In just two months, DOGE has —lost— the government an estimated half a trillion dollars. I propose that Musk pay it back personally.
