NEW: The Minerva Research Initiative, established by the Pentagon to fund social science relevant to national security, is being gutted. Dozens of researchers studying threats from extremist groups, misinformation or climate change have received notices that their grants are being terminated. 🧪

Some much needed data visualization of the federal workforce with numbers regarding where people have lost jobs so far. www.usatoday.com/story/graphi... #federalworkers #dataviz

When I was young I wanted stuff to happen. But now I know living through History sucks.

So what does Putin have? Pics of T sleeping with men? It’s ok to sleep with men…..

A grassroots movement is calling on all Americans to abstain from shopping with major retailers tomorrow, February 28, as part of an “economic blackout.” I encourage you to join. https://robertreich.substack.com/p/boycott

WASHINGTON (AP) - Most drastic cut in spending by US consumers in three years last month despite decline in inflation.

We’ve tried to shelter our minds but tonight we’re preparing for the genocide of Science. Entire NIH departments will have no leaders. World renowned Scientists kicked to the curb without cause, & grants will loose their lead investigators. Is this what they want? Chaos? Destruction?

This is really smart by @sanders.senate.gov Go to republican districts and push voters to pressure their republican reps. www.commondreams.org/news/bernie-...

I am sad to share that all Retirement & Disability Research centers have been ordered to stop work. My fellowship will no longer exist, and the work of so many talented researchers and dedicated staff will be cut short. www.ssa.gov/news/press/r...

It may not be cool or hip in some circles, but we legitimately do need a massive amount of people to run for office. Flood the school boards, councils, county seats, state legislatures, Congress, etc. Big changes at the top happen when the ground shifts at the bottom. And that can start now.

Cuts to NSF expected to be at 50% reduction in force for an independent agency that fuels discovery and innovation. "The NSF budget was $9B, or 0.13% of the total [budget]." This is not about fiscal prudence. This is about killing universities. nanoscale.blogspot.com/2025/02/the-...

No reason this can't happen everywhere

This is an Econ paper for Bridgerton and Jane Austen fans.

Wife was a probationary employee let go over the weekend. She was a researcher with CMMI. If anyone has leads on jobs for a PhD social science researcher with an expertise in Medicare, Medicaid, and private health insurance, please let me know!

It seems almost unavoidable at this point that we are headed for a deep, deep recession. Just based on 200K+ federal firings & pullback of contracts, the March employment report (to be released April 4) seems certain to show bigger job losses than any month ever outside of a few in 2008-9 and 2020.

This is a concentration camp. They are describing a concentration camp.

the “make america healthy again” agenda appears to be an elaborate op conjured up by sentient strains of listeria and salmonella www.nytimes.com/2025/02/18/u...

Federal funding cuts have forced wildland firefighters to cancel prescribed burns, which help prevent wildfires. “We will be more vulnerable to a catastrophic fire in the future as a result,” one firefighter said.

Small victories: @overleaf.com now integrates with @zotero.org to search all your bibliographies and can add those cites to the working bib. #gendersky #polisky

Congrats, America. We're now on Putin's side.

Whatever else emerges in time about the Delta crash in Canada, one thing is certain: the importance & amazing professionalism of flight attendants who safely evacuated the plane in a matter of seconds.

JUST IN: Another medical horror story in an affidavit from a USAID employee stationed overseas. Says his pregnant wife was not medevac-ed for emergency health care because of directives from DC. Took intervention of a U.S. senator to reverse — but was too late. s3.documentcloud.org/documents/25...

If you’re not confirmed by the Senate then you have no business meddling in the lives of MILLIONS of Americans We are suing DOGE for violating the constitution & illegally seizing power I’ll discuss tonight @ 8PM ET on @insidewithpsaki.msnbc.com 👇 statedemocracydefenders.org/fund/new-law...

no one ever banned the Associated Press from the White House for not saying "Latinx"

Protest in D.C. near the Capitol: #50501 #50501protests #TrumpMuskProtest

Kudos to the school administrator who wrote this letter for making it clear to families what happened and who they should blame. This is the way to build a coalition--with a shared adversary and a reason to fight.

Who has the money to make twitter and tesla crash?

Sad to hear this. The Federal Reserve has been an important partner to @aeacswep.bsky.social to help increase the representation of women in economics. @dynarski.bsky.social @jenniferdoleac.bsky.social @bencasselman.bsky.social

BREAKING: The Trump Administration is conducting mass layoffs at the FAA despite recent plane crashes, protests are set to break out today across America protesting Trump, and Europe holds an emergency summit. open.substack.com/pub/aaronpar...

Today, major U.S. cities will see protests as activists rise up against the tRump administration's anti-democratic behavior. The 50501 Movement, promoting "50 protests. 50 states. 1 movement," is organizing their 2nd nationwide protest. Try to be there. 😊 www.npr.org/2025/02/16/n...

On NIH / IDCs, here’s your framing: Every major industrialized country in the world funds its universities with money from the national treasury. Except the U.S. With a tiny number of exceptions, ours are primarily funded at the state level, or are fully private. That’s where IDCs come in. 1/N

The NIH Indirect cost reduction is a catastrophic financial event that will cripple not-for-profit hospitals. My family thinks the indirect costs are "money laundering"....can someone give a clear account of what the indirect costs go to? I know compliance, accounting, etc. but what else?

Hey @polisky.bsky.social #gendersky Friends! Want to PUBLISH papers? please REVIEW. As @mirya.bsky.social says, you owe x3 reviews for # of submissions for the system to work smoothly. @cpsjournal.bsky.social received 120+ submissions from Dec 1 to today and HUNDREDS of reviewer declines. Bad Math.

Don't forget to get your EGEN grant applications in by Feb 1. We want to give you $$$ to fund your research!
