Wondering where we are on the spectrum of Idiocracy, 1930s Germany, and the end of the world, while hoping it's not too late to reverse this.

Positive post: My other (higher chill hour) peach tree is finally blooming, and yes, the flowers really are that red:

Yep: "most unusual, not only just to receive a questionnaire at all, but this one was clearly screening for ideological questions." #Canada #AcademicSky www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

You never overreact against fascism.

With all my negative posts lately I figured I'd add something positive for a change: a green anole in one of my orange trees.

This is really concerning - Trump is essentially using his (legal or not?) ability to pull funding to silence free speech (or anything else he doesn't like). This is something I've always thought belonged in dictatorships - I never thought I'd see the day it would happen in the US.

I'm unsure what an "illegal protest" is in this context, but just seeing such words purportedly from the president of the US is terrifying. People must stand up and ensure that 1) the First Amendment continues to prevail, and 2) statements such as this are not accepted from leaders of a democracy!

Living close to the Gulf of Mexico this makes me concerned about hurricane season and my ability to know when and how to prepare (or evacuate) for an incoming storm.

My peach tree bloomed and put on a bunch of new growth at the end of last summer (but didn't set fruit) - now it's blooming again with last year's leaves still on it - hopefully it will set fruit this time...

@kendrawrites.com I thought I saw you request a link to any site keeping track of the deluge in some organized form and this is pretty useful. #AcademicSky

This is line with what I saw looking at the list personally - lots of very much non-DEI topics that either got caught up in the keyword matching, or had a clause buried in them related to diversity in some tangential way: www.npr.org/2025/02/13/n... #standupforscience2025 #sciencenotsilence

Elon Musk is developing a new payment platform called “X Money.” Guess which agency would be making sure that Elon’s new project couldn’t scam you or steal your sensitive personal data? The CFPB.

Who benefits from Trump and Elon Musk decimating USAID? Not us. China wins. Russia wins. Our adversaries win. Shutting down USAID is a betrayal of our values, our interests and our national security.

An important, essential column. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/05/o...
