I'm very happy to share with you the results of a collaborative experiment between the Catawba Indian Nation and faculty, staff, and students at Davidson College. Yield, growth, and labor demands of growing maize, beans, and squash in monoculture versus the Three Sisters🌽🫘🎃 A few take home points:

I am looking for a PhD student to start in fall of 2025 at MSU. Potential topics include trait-based approaches to plankton community resilience, temperature effects on communities, harmful algal blooms and many others. Please get in touch if interested. More info: www.kl-lab.group.

Today, I am excited to share our new paper in The American Naturalist’s (@asn-amnat.bsky.social) special feature: Demystifying Fundamental Theories in Ecology. Check out “MacArthur’s Consumer Resource Model: A ‘Rosetta Stone’ of Competitive Interactions.” doi.org/10.1086/733516 DM for a copy!

To understand how climate change affects natural ecosystems we need to know how warming influences species interactions. In our newest paper we show that predator-prey interactions fundamentally change across latitude leading to context dependent effects of warming. 🧪 doi.org/10.1111/oik....

This is so cool - this study used Chinese poetry to reconstruct 1400 years of range change for the Yangtze finless porpoise, and showed that most of the range loss happened in the last century papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

‼️Are you a Canadian who cares about EDI in research? Did you know about what’s currently going on at the Standing Committee on Science and Research in Ottawa where the "Impact of the Criteria for Awarding Federal Funding on Research Excellence in Canada" is being studied? 🧪 I didn’t till just now 1/

Are there underrated ways to save the world as a research lab? Read this week's newsletter and decide for yourself.... :) open.substack.com/pub/matthias...

I created this stater pack with women in ecology and evolution. If you want to be added you can comment or DM me, but also please suggest the names of those I am missing 🧪🌎🌐 go.bsky.app/8jFH7cS

American Society of Naturalists has its biennial conference in Asilomar CA on January 3-7 2025. evolutionary ecology, ecological genetics, behavioral ecology, and more - plenty of rooms, consider attending! Small format (~200 people) makes it a great place to network! asnasilomar2025.org

We're hiring a tenure-track Assistant Professor in undergraduate biology teaching! Come work at the University of Guelph and join an awesome department with a great and large cohort of new faculty!

Failure is a cornerstone of scientific research, but it still feels bad. Here is a short article I wrote on how to mentally deal with "failed" experiments. Does a truly "failed" experiment actually exist?? @academic-chatter.bsky.social #academicsky #microsky elisagranato.com/phd-tips-dea...

I’m doing some reflection and lite research on this but does anyone have any advice to share for new grad students to get more comfortable chatting about science, especially w “superiors” and professionals? Not presentations, chats. A grad student asked me for advice on this. #NewPI #AcademicSky 🧪

University of Calgary is hiring an assistant professor in modelling, ecology, and water. Evolutionary biologists with a focus on aquatic organisms/ecosystems and modelling should also apply! careers.ucalgary.ca/jobs/1497629...

This paper was a massive team effort that culminated in a simple story: More biodiverse communities of invertebrates, in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, have a higher content of "good fats" that are available for predators (e.g. bird, bats, fish, etc...). doi.org/10.1126/scie...

From @edyong209.bsky.social: “Every student of animal behavior—from curious children to professional zoologists—should read this book. It makes plain the forces that have skewed our understanding of what animals do, and gives us a foundation upon which we can build a better science.” bit.ly/3UL2O6m
