It was a violent day 60 years ago. Photos from that brutal beatdown on unarmed marchers went round the world. While they were not color photos, the brutality was evident. They were such brave people maintaining nonviolent protests. Role models for us all. Let us all learn from their courageous acts

The hypocrisy is off the charts.

Tragically, Trump supporters are constantly learning that he cares absolutely nothing about them. Such a painful and difficult lesson to learn: that you are a simply disposable pawn in his quest to build his own personal wealth, especially when you have no recourse and no power…

Watched On The Beach (1959) tonight, a powerful, if understated, exploration of the consequences of a nuclear war. It’s a film that’s emotional and horrifying in equal measure, but perhaps even moreso now there’s a lunatic in the White House.

No matter how many times I watch the Sky series Chernobyl I’m impressed. The capacity of an authoritarian regime to mobilise its population is impressive, but the reliance on systemic lies is less so. Trump, & de facto the USA, firmly in the authoritarian camp now.

Trump is getting ‘secret signals’ that Russia is ready for peace … yeah, sure.

The latest Maga surge on Twitter/X is Musk's claim that Biden ordered the slaughter of millions of chickens, implying that's what forced prices up under Trump. Fake news again, I'm afraid. Some suggesting the avian flu scare is a scam, natch. www.forbes.com/sites/mollyb...

Fascinating to see the herds of uncritical, often fawning, affirmations the MAGA icons generate on Twitter/X. More disturbing is the extent to which 'Soros' is identified as the source of all evil - a meme with a long history.

The Council of Europe has published its latest annual report on press freedom in Europe, highlighting issues related to political pressure, misinformation and attacks on the independence of the media. Details and free download available here: edoc.coe.int/fr/medias/12...

If you're an authoritarian and you're running the economy into the ground, how do you deal with this crisis? Manipulate the statistics and claim everything is getting better. Simples.

From the Economist

At 9am on Saturday morning, a group of women spread across a busy street in central Kyiv and stopped traffic to observe a minute of silence. A loudspeaker counted 60 ticks before blaring the opening lines of the national anthem — “Ukraine’s glory and freedom have not yet perished”… on.ft.com/4kjCmfk

Wall Street Journal Editorial Board comes out swinging against JD Vance. Indeed, key moment in downward spiral was Vance lashing out in response to Zelenskyy's point on diplomacy with Putin WSJ: "It is bewildering to see Mr. Trump’s allies defending this debacle as some show of American strength."

It would take seven patriotic Republicans to stop this. Only seven. And we can’t even find one

There are days when the line between right and wrong is blurred, but there are other days where the line is clear and unambiguous. On those days people who stand for democracy stand with those who fight fascism. This is one of those days. #StandwithUkraine.

Those blaming Zelenskyy for the train-wreck in the White House do so because he declined to accommodate the lies and conceits with which Trump surrounds himself, or adopt the obsequious deference that ‘clever’ politicians think is required. He was ‘out of step’, but he was right.

This was a disgusting display by the soft, uninformed VP Vance trying to school Zelensky, the man who has led his country through the most surprisingly resilient and effective fight for sovereignty against a global superpower. Every negative stereotype about America is confirmed in this exchange.

“We may never know why Trump is so perversely loyal to Putin,” and “we don't know exactly why Musk went all in for Trump and Russia,” Garry Kasparov writes. “But the urgency of their actions I do understand, and it's a dire warning”:

Might be the most shameful moment of this Presidency so far. Zelensky vs two of Putin's attack dogs.

Let it all come out. There will be a reckoning. Zelensky is a hero.

Our leaders acting like ventriloquist dummies for Putin. Disgusting.

No, the meeting did not go badly for Ukraine. It exposed in the most undeniable, unequivocal way possible the pro-Putin commitments of the president and vice president. That was information Americans and allies needed to have clear before them.

The media better stop calling the Zelenskyy press conference a “heated exchange”. Call it what it was, a crazy, inappropriate, unhinged, shakedown, by a madman and his lapdog.

Why tackle child poverty now? asks @mikebrewerecon.bsky.social Britain is a rich country that can afford to defend itself and ensure children dont grow up in poverty. If we can't defend ourselves we won't be rich for much longer, and if we can't support our children what's the point of being rich?
