My cat just logged a new entry in Litterboxd

SING SING was one of my absolute favorites of 2024, so getting to spend an hour with the majestic Colman Domingo was a damn treat. At one point I sheepishly told him I struggled with Shakespeare—and he responded by delivering a captivating monologue for me. (Also GREAT photos by Shayan Asgharnia.)

Lovely Laura, lovely tribute. I asked you, “Why did you call me Tidbit?” And you said, “Because you’re a tidbit — a little bit of tid.”

Just straight up Severancing myself from his nonsense for the next four years

me grabbing the controls tomorrow

David Lynch gave us the language we needed to better articulate the indescribable strangeness of our shared reality. “Lynchian” is so overused because it’s a viscerally understandable word without any known synonyms. I can’t imagine a more beautiful artistic legacy than that.

A few years ago I asked David Lynch if he had solved the mystery of love. "No," he said, "it's unsolvable. But anyway, it's a beautiful thing to ponder along the way." I'm really mad and sad today... but I guess I should take his advice to heart and find the beauty in pondering that mystery.

Robert Iggers' MUSFERATU

I can't believe how massive the score for The Brutalist sounds, considering how intimate and ragtag its construction was. I enjoyed talking to Daniel Blumberg about one of the more interesting scores of the year.

Whatever happened to Lucas Hedges? Did Chalamet have him whacked or something?

Upping this silly (but also serious) question for @mattzollerseitz.bsky.social ...

@mattzollerseitz.bsky.social Question for the movie book maven: has there never been, other than Gottlieb's JAWS Log, a serious book about any one of Spielberg's films? I see a few corporately sanctioned "visual histories" and some sketchy self-published things, but is there really nothing else?

Looking forward to the documentary (or podcast) about how one of our great comedy dudes turned into the most insufferable chicken little schoolmarm

I love Pablo Larraín's "caged bird" trilogy, and each entry has given me an excuse to interview this thoughtful, poetic director about the music. And even though there is no *score* in Maria, the musical selections were masterfully chosen to provide the audience with a hidden "map."

After Zhao's Eternals, Chung's Twisters, and Jenkins' Mufasa, I'm so stoked for RaMell Ross' OPTIMUS PRIME, JR. (done all in first-person POV)

oh cool another superman movie

I WAS THERE TOO

Is Coldplay just Sesame Street now?

My journalism career might as well be dying, so my Make-a-Wish was to attend a taping of Comedy Bang! Bang!, the ultimate improv comedy podcast I've been loving for ten years. I wrote about that, and the joy and legacy of the show. Thanks @scottaukerman.bsky.social!

The holy trinity of modern cinema

Isn't it funny how far apart the electric blanket and the electric chair are on the coziness spectrum?

The year's weirdest and most audacious film? Probably THE END, a sincerely lovely musical about a family in a survival bunker 20 years after a climate apocalypse, starring Tilda Swinton and Michael Shannon and directed by the guy who made the harrowing 2012 documentary, The Act of Killing.

Don't mind me... just gabbing with Francis Ford Coppola (!) and Giancarlo Esposito (???) about one of the best scores of 2024: Osvaldo Golijov's monumental New Roman opera for the messy masterpiece, MEGALOPOLIS.

One of my favorite scores of the year—and hands down my favorite *theme*—was such a total surprise, courtesy of a new kid on the Hollywood block: Umberto Smerilli. He and director Aaron Schimberg helped me explore the music inside A Different Man.

“It's very easy to fall into the trap of looking for one’s dreams and always thinking of a future moment when everything will be better. And if the process is not enjoyed, the dreams will never come to anything. And by enjoying the process, you are creating a dream come true.” —David Bowie
