1001 Movies πŸ“½ to Watch Before You Die. #474 is Close-Up (1990) A masterful blend of documentary and fiction, exploring identity, deception, and human nature with deep empathy. The blurred lines between truth and performance make it mesmerizing. A quietly powerful, thought-provoking gem. **83/100**

1001 Movies πŸ“½ to Watch Before You Die. #473 is Closely Watched Trains (1966) A dry, dark comedy coming-of-age tale set against WWII's backdrop. Its mix of deadpan humor, romance, and tragedy unfolds with quiet charm, though its pacing may test some. 72/100β€”worth a watch for Czech New Wave fans!

Rewatching Close Encounters of the Third Kind tonight. Fill in the blank. Close Encounters is Steven Spielberg's ___ best film πŸŽ₯ I'd put it 8th behind (in no particular order) Schindler's List, Jurassic Park, Last Crusade, Raiders, Jaws, Saving Private Ryan, E.T.

In honor of Gene Hackman's passing, what is your favorite role of his? Top 5 for me: 1. Royal Tenenbaum (The Royal Tenenbaums) 2. Popeye Doyle (The French Connection 3. Bill Daggett (Unforgiven) 4. Norman Dale (Hoosiers) 5. Rupert Anderson (Mississippi Burning)

Author and illustrator Edward Gorey would have been 100 years old today. I am a big fan of his outre and macabre style. My personal favorite books are The Gashlycrumb Tinies, The Epiplectic Bicycle, The Doubtful Guest, and The Object-Lesson. What are your favorites?

And now for my top 10 Best Picture Oscar Winners...

19. 12 Years a Slave (2013) Directed by Steve McQueen Starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Lupita Nyong'o, Benedict Cumberbatch A very powerful film. A tragic story handled with raw honesty that it is impossible to look away. Ejiofor and Nyong'o both deliver heartbreaking performances.

29. The Deer Hunter (1978) Directed by Michael Cimino Starring Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, John Cazale Nuanced character study about the atrocities of war. The last hour is absolutely gripping. The iconic Russian roulette scene stays with you and the final scene is gut wrenching.

39. Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) Directed by Robert Benton Starring Dustin Hoffman, Meryl Streep, Jane Alexander The direction is solid, but the script is what makes this film exceptional. A masterwork of dialogue, emotion, and humanity. Hoffman and Streep are great and the courtroom scene is iconic.
