Remembering Silvio Moser, born #OnThisDay in ’41. Quick in #F3 & #F2, he started 12 #F1 GPs in privateer Coopers & Brabhams & his own Bellasi (pic). Pretty it was; fast it wasn’t. He entered it in 6 F1 GPs & he DNQ’d for 4, DNF-ing the other 2. He died in the ’74 #Monza1000km.

Mike Taylor was born #OnThisDay in ’34. He entered 2 #F1 GPs, Aintree ’59 in a Cooper (pic) & Spa ’60 in a Lotus. He didn’t start at Spa because he crashed in practice. Stirling Moss crashed another Lotus. Moss broke his legs & Taylor his neck, but he recovered to sue Lotus.(1/2)

#HappyBirthday Pierluigi Martini, 64. Pic: en route to a P8 grid slot in Monaco quali in ’90 in a Minardi M190. Sadly, he retired in the race - & scored no points all year. #AnorakFact: the M190 was designed by Aldo Costa, who went on to fame & fortune with Ferrari & Merc.

#OnThisDay 25 years ago David Coulthard won the #BritishGP for McLaren - but his victory isn’t what this particular #F1 GP will be remembered for. Click below to read my new #MotorSport column. www.motorsportmagazine.com/articles/sin...

Ecclestone & Mosley usually got what they wanted in #F1, but not always. Tomorrow marks 25 years since they deliberately rendered the #BritishGP a mud bath & a laughing stock - but the BRDC had the last laugh. Here’s one for the anoraks among you, because this is a tasty #AnorakFact: #OnThisDay in ’61 this was the 1-2-3 result of the non-championship #F1 #Aintree200 &, as you see, it was comprised of 3 drivers who went on to found their own F1 teams bearing their own names.

#OnThisDay in ’57, at Goodwood, Stuart Lewis-Evans won the non-championship #F1 #GloverTrophy in this Connaught Type-B. (1/2)

I rated Zhao Xintong extremely highly before his temporary fall from grace but he’s paid his dues & he’s now back at his brilliant best. He’s just beaten last year’s finalist Jak Jones in this year’s #Snooker #WorldChampionship, & I reckon he could win it.

#OnThisDay 40 years ago Ayrton Senna scored his first #F1 GP win, at Estoril, in teeming rain. It was a superb victory, stunning in its dominance (he lapped all but one other driver) & elegant in its execution, & what a fab pic Steven Tee took of Lotus team manager Peter Warr!

Yet another perfect drive by Oscar Piastri. Well done! 👏 #F1 #SaudiArabianGP

50-year-old Mark Williams had to pull out all the stops, including some unusual safety play, to beat 21-year-old Wu Yize 10-8 in the #Snooker #WorldChampionship just now. It was great telly. Next up: the #SaudiArabianGP.

Remembering Stuart Lewis-Evans, born #OnThisDay in ’30, who raced 14 #F1 GPs in ’57 & ’58, finishing 3rd at Spa & Oporto in ’58, managed by Bernie Ecclestone. He died of burns sustained in a shunt at Ain-Diab later that year. Pic: Pescara, ’57, with an uber-cool Vanwall mechanic.

Remembering Phil Hill, born #OnThisDay in ’27. A fine #F1 driver - ’61 world champion - he was at his very best in sports cars, winning the #LeMans24Hours & #Sebring12Hours 3 times each. Pic (by Jesse Alexander): in a Ferrari 250GTO, recce-ing the ’62 #TargaFlorio, with goats.

My hubby Angel & I have just enjoyed a great meal - the tasting menu with paired wines - at Joia, an Iberian restaurant on the 15th floor of the stylish but pretentiously punctuated Art’otel, beside Battersea Power Station. We had a window table - & what a great view it provided!

#OnThisDay 55 years ago Jackie Stewart (Tyrrell March) won the #SpanishGP - but there was an eerie polarity in the stories of the 2 other podium finishers, Bruce McLaren (McLaren, 2nd) & Mario Andretti (STP March, 3rd). It was Mario’s first #F1 GP podium... & Bruce’s last. 😢

Here’s an inspirational #GoodFriday listen: it’s a brand-new episode of Richard Williams’ & my #F1 history podcast, #AndColossallyThatsHistory. This week we discuss how Frank Williams survived his disabling accident & indeed thrived thereafter. Click below. podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/a...

#OnThisDay 15 years ago we McLarenites could reflect on a job well done. Jenson Button had just won the #ChineseGP ahead of team-mate Lewis Hamilton; Jenson led the #F1 drivers’ world championship by 10 points; & McLaren led the F1 constructors’ world championship by 19 points.

#OnThisDay in ’71 Jackie Stewart won the #SpanishGP, at mighty Montjuïc, the Tyrrell team’s first #F1 GP win in a car entirely of its own manufacture (the Tyrrell 003). #AnorakFact: the race was the first F1 GP in which slick tyres were used.

#HappyBirthday Anthony Davidson, 46. He entered one #F1 GP for BAR, 2 for Minardi & 21 for Super Aguri (pic), the latter 2 fielding poor cars, but he showed his talent in #WEC, for Toyota, winning 10 #LMP1 races & becoming world champion in 2014. He also won 3 times in #LMP2.

#OnThisDay in ’42 Jochen Rindt was born. I wonder what he’d be doing were he alive today. He’d be 83, Bernie Ecclestone’s lifelong business partner, a billionaire, & perhaps RER (Rindt Ecclestone Racing) would be en route to its 20th #F1 world championship. (1/2)

Bob Drake died #OnThisDay 35 years ago, aged 70. He started one #F1 GP, at Riverside in ’60, in a privateer Maserati 250F (pic), the final appearance of that iconic car in a championship F1 GP - #AnorakFact. He was a racer, a stunt performer, a naval diver & a restaurateur.

Nice Saab 9-3 spotted & snapped in Earlsfield, London, just now. It feels strange to me that this car is 25 years old - but time flies!

#HappyBirthday Romain Grosjean, 39. Pic: he used to have bad hair (IMHO!). But who am I to talk about bad hair?! 🧑‍🦲

#OnThisDay in 2016 Nico Rosberg won the #ChineseGP. #AnorakFact: until the 2023 #DutchGP, this #F1 GP featured a record-setting 161 overtakes, breaking the previous record of 147 set in the 2012 #BrazilGP.

Brilliant #ChineseGP victory #OnThisDay in 2011 by Lewis Hamilton (McLaren; pic), who took a thrilling 3-stop win, overtaking his 2-stopping rival & drivers’ world championship leader Seb Vettel (Red Bull) on lap 52 of the 56-lap race.

The ’94 #PacificGP was run #OnThisDay 31 years ago. It’s rarely now remarked upon because the tragedies of the next #F1 GP, at Imola, overshadow it; but it was interesting, & it was poignant for Senna fans. #HappyBirthday Riccardo Patrese, 71. He started 256 #F1 GPs, the record for 19 years, won 6, & finished 2nd in the F1 world championship in ’92, & 3rd in ’89 & ’91. He won those 6 F1 GPs for Brabham & Williams, but I always think of him in an Arrows (pic), where he made his name.

Frank Williams, one of the greatest figures in the history of #F1, was born #OnThisDay in ’42. I knew him well, & I wrote this #MotorSport column about him last year. ICYMI then, click below to read it now. www.motorsportmagazine.com/articles/sin...

Dick Gibson was born #OnThisDay in 1918. A hillclimber, he raced in 2 #F1 GPs: Nürburgring ’57 & ’58. #AnorakFact: during the ’57 #GermanGP Donavon Smith took a series of great colour pics, including this one of Gibson pushing his Cooper to a safe place after it had failed him.

Everyone knows about Imola ’94, for obvious reasons. But the 2 #F1 GPs that preceded it, Interlagos & Aida, are rarely remembered. Each was interesting, & both were poignant, especially for Senna fans. Click below to read my brand-new #MotorSport column. www.motorsportmagazine.com/articles/sin...

Nico Rosberg made his #F1 debut in 2006, & he had to wait 6 years to score his first GP win, #OnThisDay in 2012. If you think that was a long wait for Nico, it was nothing compared with the 57 years his Merc team had waited since their last F1 GP win (Juan Manuel Fangio, Monza, ’55; pic).

#OnThisDay in 2007 Massa (pic) won the #BahrainGP, but all the talk was of Hamilton, who’d made history by becoming the first driver to finish on the podium in all his first 3 championship #F1 GPs. In the end Lewis extended that run to 9 out of 9. Beautiful photo by Cahier.

#OnThisDay in 2001, at Imola, Ralf Schumacher (pic) won an #F1 GP for the first time. It was Williams’ first F1 GP win since Jacques Villeneuve had won at Nürburgring in September ’97. #AnorakFact: Imola 2001 was also Gastón Mazzacane’s 21st & final F1 GP.

#OnThisDay in ’79, in this Ferrari 312T3, Gilles Villeneuve won the non-championship #F1 #RaceOfChampions at Brands Hatch. #AnorakFact: the field included 7 drivers/cars that competed in the F1 world championship; the rest were drivers/cars from the #AuroraAFX British F1 series.

Remembering Ernesto Prinoth, born #OnThisDay in 1923. He entered one #F1 GP, Monza ’62, in a privateer Lotus 18, but he DNQ’d, having raced it well in 2 ’61 non-championship F1 races, the #ViennaGP (3rd) & the #CoppaItalia (2nd). But he’s better known for 2 other things. (1/3)

Remembering Graham Whitehead, born #OnThisDay in 1922. He started one GP, Silverstone ’52, in an #F2 Alta, & he had more success in sports cars, the highlight 2nd place at Le Mans in ’58 in an Aston Martin DB3S (pic) shared with his more famous half-brother Peter Whitehead. (1/3)
