“Left unchecked, the slide away from generosity ultimately robs us of significant cultural achievements, on which our flourishing as individuals and communities depends.” Free of Charge, Miroslav Volf, pg. 15. (Published in 2005. Scarily prescient.)

“We live in a culture in which, yes, extraordinary generosity does happen. But at the same time, that culture is largely stripped of grace. It's not a gracelessness that's necessarily apparent at first glance, but it nonetheless underlies so many of our interactions.” Free of Charge, Miroslav Volf

Downsizing @michellevanloon.bsky.social pg. 39 (Oh Michelle! I wore a doily until I was 40! Grew up PB but then family switched to a house church movement that relied heavily on the Brethren. This chapter is walking down memory lane.)

Birds are so interesting. A great crested flycatcher regularly flies at my office window. A Canada goose stands threateningly on the edge of the roof. I worry that the flycatcher will hurt itself. But I also wonder if the goose is waiting to swoop down on an unsuspecting human.

“Public impatience, misinformation about the nature of COVID’s spread & corporate influence over institutional public health, meant that, rather than mitigate ongoing risk by demanding clean-air & accessible healthcare, our leaders announced disabled people would have to fall by the wayside”

“Our ultimate end must be the creation of the beloved community. The tactics of nonviolence without the spirit of nonviolence may indeed become a new kind of violence." Social Justice for the Sensitive Soul, pgs. 28-29. #lunchtimereading

“Celebrity is a mask that eats into the face. As soon as one is aware of being somebody, to be watched and listened to with extra interest, input ceases, and the performer goes blind and deaf in his overanimation.” John Updike

I’m reading “Careless People” by Sarah Wynn-Williams and also reading “On Tyranny” by Timothy Snyder. There’s an overlap, which may be why FB has been trying to squelch the former book. Information control which leads to obscene wealth and power is an empire.
