For all of us, feeling that we have some control in our lives is vital to our wellbeing. Feeling out of control is a sure way to bring on negative behaviors—whether the person is a child, a healthy adult, or someone experiencing #dementia. buff.ly/2KaYsT3 #Alzheimers

Being able to add to the conversation—and have what we say be appreciated—is companionship. If your companion is experiencing #dementia, make sure they can share favorite memories and stories. You may have heard it before, but they will always be telling you for the first time.

When an experience has been mostly positive but ends in a negative way, we tend to recall the experience as negative. When care partners make sure activities end on a happy note, their companions with #dementia will be able to move on to the next activity with a positive mood.

The ability to track time and events—to pay attention—is one of the skills lost in #dementia. This is both disconcerting and frightening. Be kind: verbalize what has happened, is happening, and will happen next. Then I can feel a sense of control, too. #Alzheimers

#Dementia affects my memory and attention skills. Be kind: narrate what we've done, are doing, and are about to do. This helps me follow along so I can take part and enjoy myself too. Dignity lies in knowing what's going on. buff.ly/2KaYsT3 #Alzheimers #DementiaCare

Whether our companions are experiencing #dementia or not, we enjoy less conflict if we share information as teammates rather than superiors. Dementia affects our skills, not our intelligence or humanity. We are all equal. https://buff.ly/2KaYsT3 #Alzheimers #DementiaCare

Filled with practical tools, this book empowers you to enhance the emotional environment for both you and your loved one with #dementia. We equip you with lasting skills to navigate dementia with confidence and compassion. https://buff.ly/3EUUCLI

The greatest truth about working with #dementia is this: Dementia takes away our ability to leave the present, and our ability to shape the present, but not our ability to enjoy it. https://buff.ly/3EUOqU7 #mindfulness #alzheimers #dementiacare #caregiving #mindfulcaregiving

Moving from one room to another—or one activity to another—makes it likely that people experiencing #dementia will become confused (we lose attention skills, too). Help by narrating what is happening as you get out of the car, enter buildings or rooms, or begin an activity.

Failing to recognize family and friends is particularly embarrassing for those with #dementia. Instead of taking it personally, accept this natural result of memory loss and just kindly say your name and relationship whenever needed—so love and companionship can continue.

I have watched my friends with #dementia develop a sense of wellbeing when I help them in the following areas: feeling socially successful, exercising choice and autonomy, feeling valued and respected, and feeling that the future is secure. Strength-based care! #Alzheimers

We can help our companions with #dementia learn to trust others to care for them. We do this by not testing their failing memory skills, partnering with them to accomplish tasks and solve problems, and by working with their version of reality with kindness and respect.

We can accept our loved ones’ distorted memories and realities as part of their #dementia—as an indication that they are unable to use rational thought, even though we know that their assertions are not true, however mistaken. In doing so we are being kind and respectful.

When we focus on the steps in a task or for finding something lost—and provide a cheerful narrative—we become companions on a mission together. There is comfort in following a process even if success is not probable. https://buff.ly/2KaYsT3 #dementia #Alzheimers #DementiaCare

When care partners of people experiencing #dementia try to persuade them that their version of reality is incorrect, they're asking them to use lost skills. Behaviors follow. Be creative and kind, and companionship will result. https://buff.ly/2KaYsT3 #Alzheimers #DementiaCare

It’s emotionally painful for our brains to have too little sensory or social stimulation. Get out and go. Life is lived best as a treasure hunt. https://buff.ly/3WMAyRS #dementia #mindfulness #mindfulcaregiving #alzheimers #dementiacare #caregiving #dementiasupport

The #dementia care partner’s goal is to communicate "let’s solve this together" rather than "you should know how to do that" or "let me do that for you (because I can do it faster)." https://buff.ly/2KaYsT3 #Alzheimers #DementiaCare

This book provides tools and techniques that we can use when we spend time with people experiencing #dementia, which will dramatically improve the emotional environment for both parties in the care relationship. #Alzheimers #DementiaCare

As care partners, we need to join our companions in doing simple tasks without becoming upset or critical, or even seeming surprised, so that they learn it is safe to fail—and safe to rely on us for help. https://buff.ly/2KaYsT3 #dementia #Alzheimers #DementiaCare

One of the most frustrating things about having #dementia is waking up one day and finding yourself unable to perform a task or use a skill that has been effortless since you were a child. Always be kind and compassionate. https://buff.ly/2KaYsT3 #Alzheimers #DementiaCare

Care partner: don't put me on the spot—don't test my failing memory and recall. I will feel safer with #dementia if you chatter to share information with me instead of questioning me. We'll both experience less stress if I feel safe being forgetful and confused when I'm with you.

Feeling safe with a care partner's requires their help in building trust in three key areas: I will need your help to feel safe even though I'm confused and forget things, need help with simple tasks, and see reality differently than you. Security brings peace. #dementia #Alzheimers

We provide care partners with tools and techniques to meet the emotional needs in #dementia. When we recognize emotional distress as the primary problem and behaviors as mere result, behaviors become predictable and avoidable. The DAWN Method teaches strength-based #dementiaCare.

One of the most unkind things we can do to people who have #dementia is to keep them waiting. Dementia takes away the ability to perceive the passage of time—a minute or an hour can both feel eternal. Try to be punctual. https://buff.ly/2KaYsT3 #Alzheimers #DementiaCare

Dementia takes away abilities we've relied on all our lives and insecurity results. We can help our companions relearn safety despite confusion and to trust others for care. We can do this because #dementia doesn't take away the intuitive or the ability to learn thru experience.

Having #dementia means experiencing increasing confusion and repeated failures. It means never feeling truly safe. The dementia care partner’s job is to overcome these negative emotions and help the person who's experiencing dementia regain a sense of security. #Alzheimers

As #dementia care partners, when we share information without being directive or authoritative, companionship is maintained. Be a teammate, not the boss. Bring beauty, respect feelings, allow choice, and love laughter. You'll both benefit. #Alzheimers

If your companion is walking the #dementia path, they will need your help learning that it's safe to be confused and safe to need help. If you begin by meeting security needs, wellbeing and companionship can continue. https://buff.ly/2KaYsT3 #Alzheimers #DementiaCare

When doing a task together, narrate what you've done, are doing, and will do next. This helps the person experiencing #dementia because they are losing rational thought and memory—and need help to take part and follow along. https://buff.ly/2KaYsT3 #Alzheimers #DementiaCare

Voicing relevant facts and verbalizing our rational thought processes is important for our friends with #dementia. When we consistently and happily supply information as it is needed, we find that our companions become more comfortable and relaxed. https://buff.ly/2KaYsT3

When care partners provide personalized sensory and social stimulation, they will see less restlessness and sundowning. Our brains need stimulation no less than our stomachs need food. We cannot relax otherwise. https://buff.ly/2KaYsT3 #dementia #Alzheimers #DementiaCare

The care partner's nonverbal communication has the greatest impact on the mood of those experiencing #dementia, because #dementia takes away our ability to change our own moods. Teach yourself a to wear a smile for your default expression and you'll enhance your companion's mood.
