I found out today that my niece died. I have not posted about this on Facebook because I want to give the family a chance to notify folks first. She died 4 days before her 46th birthday of a gunshot wound. Apparent suicide with suspicious circumstances.

If I were a pilot, I think my handle would be "Bottleneck." It seems like people are always waiting on me. Of course, the times I have to wait for others never count.

I don't know if Thomas Paine actually said this, but it does sound like him.

Gut punch!

I spent the last few weeks rereading a couple of draft novels I wrote because I have an opportunity to give a reading on Saturday. Then, I caught up on the news. The grim world I created does not compare with reality.

I would also make offers to every licensed engineer in the U.S. to permanently relocate. Because if such an offer were made to me, I'd take it.

The only question is how.

Your grocery bill, and many other things you buy, will go up. At this rate, we'll all join the permanent Underclass very soon.

And we aren't even to February yet.

Somehow, I can hear Soundgarden out there.

So, if I understand the current headlines correctly, anyone who is not a white, straight male has lost legal support in the job market. Bottom line for me is I am as potentially fucked at the end of my career as I was at the beginning. Welcome to 21st century America.

Facts,

Well, I made the mistake of opening my latest issue of The Economist. An avalanche has statred. I just wish more pebbles had voted to stop it. Somehow, I have got to make it to retirement so I can leave this all too Red State. 1/2

Hmm.

Icicles and blue skies. Not a common sight on the Gulf Coast.

I snuck away from my desk to take snow pictures. Yesterday was a historic weather event. We got the second highest snowfall ever - Officially 6 - 8 inches, which is pretty close to what I measured at my house.

Here we go

This is brilliant!! 😂✊🏼

Advisories and watches, oh my!

Wow.

This just hit my phone. For the second time in my life, "Hell" is making a comment on current events. The first time was when the Saints won the Superbowl.

I just returned from Atlanta. I cannot stress how much I missed eating in Baton Rouge.

This was all too real with Steward in our state: private equity companies are vampires, sucking out value from our health care system and funneling it to their investors. And patients suffer. This is a great report, and I have a bill to stop private equity's abusive practices.

Manhattan smog: fog + pollutants. From 1971-77, the Documerica project captured 20,000 images of America’s environmental impact. Explore these through the National Archives. The photo below is from Documerica—join the movement! Let’s not forget our past, or we’re bound to repeat it.
